South Carolina Gamecocks Women's Track And Field
The South Carolina Gamecocks women's track and field team represents the University of South Carolina and competes in the Southeastern Conference. The team has been coached by Curtis Frye since 1997. The facilities continue to be improved, including the recent addition of 1,450 seats at outdoor track & field facility. Curtis Frye
Curtis Frye (born October 20, 1951, in Vass, North Carolina) is the head coach for the University of South Carolina Track and Field teams. He served as an assistant coach for the United States women's track and field team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Fry's coaching specialties are the hurdling events, sprints, and relays. These are also his areas of responsibility on the US Women's Olympic team. Before coming to South Carolina, Frye was an assistant coach at East Carolina University, the University of Florida, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At Florida he coached Dennis Mitchell, who went on to win the bronze medal in the 100 meter dash at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Chelsea Hammond
Chelsea Hammond (born August 2, 1983 in New York City) is a Jamaican long jumper, who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She nearly missed out of the podium in the women's long jump, when Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare obtained her best possible mark of 6.91 metres at her third attempt, to claim the bronze medal. In 2017, the second-place finisher, Tatyana Lebedeva had a positive test for turinabol and was disqualified from her silver medal. The medals were redistributed and Blessing Okagbare was advanced to silver, and Chelsea Hammond was advanced to bronze. Charlie Strong (track Coach)
Charles Rene Strong (born August 2, 1960) is an American football coach who was most recently the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Miami. He recently served as the assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) in 2021 and also previously served as a defensive analyst at the University of Alabama in 2020. Strong served as the head coach at the University of South Florida from 2017 to 2019, University of Texas at Austin from 2014 to 2016 and the University of Louisville from 2010 to 2013. Prior to becoming head coach at Louisville, Strong held numerous assistant coaching positions. Metro Conference
The Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Conference, popularly known as the Metro Conference, was an NCAA Division I athletics conference, so named because its six charter members were all in urban metropolitan areas, though its later members did not follow that pattern. The conference was centered in the Upper South with some strength in the Deep South. The conference never sponsored football, although most of its members throughout its history had Division I-A football programs (from 1983 to 1991, all Metro schools had independent football programs). In 1995, it merged with the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA. Tonique Williams-Darling ( Williams; born January 17, 1976, Nassau, Bahamas) is a Bahamian sprint athlete. She won the gold medal in the 400 meters at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. College She attended the University of South Carolina, graduating with a bachelor's degree from the Moore School of Business in 1999. Professional Williams-Darling had a breakout year in 2004. Tiffany Williams (née Ross; born 5 February 1983 in Miami, Florida) is an American hurdler who is a former US 400m hurdles champion in 2007 and 2008. She had a standout collegiate career at the University of South Carolina, as SEC champion 3 years in a row and a 15 time all American. She finished fourth at the 2002 World Junior Championships and second at the 2006 World Athletics Final. Shevon Stoddart
Shevon Nieto (née Stoddart; born 21 November 1982) is a former Jamaican hurdler. She won the bronze medal at the 2005 Central American and Caribbean Championships and finished fifth at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. At the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games she won a silver medal in 4x400 metres relay. She also competed at the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2005 World Championships without reaching the final. Jeanelle Scheper (born 21 November 1994) is a Saint Lucian high jumper. She is the second athlete from St. Lucia to qualify for the high jump final in the World Championships in Athletics after Levern Spencer did it starting in 2007 when in 2015 she joined Spencer in the final. Lisa Vasa Misipeka (born January 3, 1975) is an American Samoan athlete who specialises in the hammer throw. She was the first woman to represent American Samoa at the Olympics. Natasha Hastings
Natasha Monique Hastings (born July 23, 1986) is an American 400 meter track and field sprinter. Career Hastings began her track career at a very early age and made a first place win at the USATF Junior Olympics in the 400 metres in the Youth Girls division. She attended A. Philip Randolph Campus High School in Harlem, New York, where she was able to take her track and field interest to a more competitive level. Hastings attended the University of South Carolina to work under Curtis Frye. There, Hastings started to become known as "the 400M Diva" after accidentally describing the ladies track team as the "Gamecock Divas" in honor of the school's mascot, the Gamecock. After coming back from a key injury, 2007 was considered Hastings' breakout year.
