South Carolina Department Of Agriculture
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is a state government agency that oversees and promotes agriculture in the state of South Carolina. It is led by a commissioner of agriculture, a position currently held by Republican Hugh Weathers. Responsibilities According to South Carolina law, "The Department of Agriculture shall execute the laws of this State pertaining to agriculture." The SCDA is also responsible for leading safety inspections of farms across South Carolina. In order for any business to sell, manufacture, or pack and food in South Carolina, it must receive a manufacturers, processors and packers permit after inspection from the SCDA. In 2006, the department enacted the phrase "Certified SC Grown," a label which can only be attached to produce grown in South Carolina. Hugh Weathers
Hugh Weathers is an American politician from South Carolina. He serves as South Carolina's Commissioner of Agriculture. He has held the position since September 14, 2004. Weathers is a member of the Republican Party. Early life and career Weathers is from Bowman, South Carolina, where he grew up on Weathers Farms, a dairy farm. He graduated from Bowman Academy as its valedictorian. He earned his bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from the University of South Carolina in 1980, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Weathers joined the family dairy business in 1980. He and his brother, Landry, inherited the farm. "King Cotton" is a slogan that summarized the strategy used before the American Civil War (of 1861–1865) by secessionists in the southern states (the future Confederate States of America) to claim the feasibility of secession and to prove there was no need to fear a war with the northern states. The theory held that control over cotton exports would make a proposed independent Confederacy economically prosperous, would ruin the textile industry of New England, and—most importantly—would force the United Kingdom and perhaps France to support the Confederacy militarily because their industrial economies depended on Southern cotton. The South Carolina General Assembly, also called the South Carolina Legislature, is the state legislature of the U.S. state of South Carolina. Charles Ray Sharpe (born September 6, 1938) is a former American politician in the state of South Carolina. Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford Jr. (born May 28, 1960) is an American politician and author who served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina's 1st congressional district from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2013 to 2019, and also as the 115th governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011.
