South American Coach Of The Year
The South American Coach of the Year ( es, Entrenador del año en Sudamérica) is an annual association football award presented to the best coach of a club or national team in South America over the previous calendar year. The award has been presented by Uruguayan newspaper ''El País'' since 1986. The award goes to any coach/manager of a South American club or national team, regardless of the coaches' nationality. Argentine coaches have won the award the most, with 20 wins by 11 different coaches. With five awards, Argentine Carlos Bianchi is the most decorated awardee. The Colombia national team is the side that produced most winners, with 5 in total. The current winner for 2021 is the Portuguese Abel Ferreira, manager of Brazilian side Palmeiras, the first non-South American national to win it. Marcelo Alberto Bielsa Caldera (, nicknamed ''El Loco Bielsa'' , meaning "The Crazy Bielsa"; born 21 July 1955) is an Argentine professional football manager who was most recently the head coach of Premier League club Leeds United. He is a former player and played as a defender for Newell's Old Boys, Instituto and Argentino de Rosario. Bielsa played as a defender in Newell's Old Boys' First Division team, but retired when he was 25 to focus on coaching. Bielsa has managed several football clubs and also the national teams of Argentina and Chile. Edgardo Bauza (born 26 January 1958) is an Argentine football manager and former player who played as a defender. Before taking up management, he played over 300 games for Rosario Central. He also played for Independiente in Argentina, Atlético Junior in Colombia and Veracruz in Mexico. Gerardo Daniel "Tata" Martino (born 20 November 1962) is an Argentine professional football manager and former player. Martino played mostly for Newell's Old Boys in his native Rosario. He holds the record of appearances with the team playing a total of 505 matches in all official competitions. He was also selected in a fan's poll as Newell's best player throughout the club's history. Claudio Daniel Borghi Bidos (; born 28 September 1964), nicknamed ''Bichi'', is an Argentine naturalized Chilean football manager and former player who played as an attacking midfielder. He has been active as a player and coach mostly in Argentina and Chile, and also played in Italy, Switzerland, Brazil and Mexico; and coached in Ecuador. Luis Fernando Montoya Soto (born 2 May 1957) is a former Colombian Association football, football manager, best known for leading Once Caldas to winning 2004 Copa Libertadores.
