South African Music Award For Newcomer Of The Year
The South African Music Awards (often simply the SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held in late-April or May every year, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The show is consistently held at the Super Bowl in Sun City, with exception of two years, and broadcast live on national broadcaster, SABC. The ceremony features live performances by a selection of nominees. Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) is a trade association representing the interests of major and independent record labels of South Africa. Located in Randburg, RISA is responsible for running the annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and for music recording certification in South Africa. It also runs The Official South African Charts (TOSAC). Anti-piracy RISA is the body that represents musicians and publishers when it comes to copyright. The South African Copyright Act of 1978 states: "You may not make a copy of a sound recording without the permission of the author." Bambata (music Project)
Bambata is a music project in South Africa which has produced three popular albums, ''1906'' in 2000, '' ukhandampondo (poll tax)'' in 2002, and '' Abashokobezi 1906–2006'' in 2006. The main forces in this project are Sipho Sithole, director and founder of the Native Rhythms Productions, Philangezwi Bongani Nkwanyana, Mathufela Zuma and Bheki Khoza. They chose the name Bambata for their project in order to honour Bambatha kaMancinza (ca. 1860–1906?), a Zulu chief of the amaZondi tribe in the Colony of Natal (modern Kwazulu-Natal), who had a large role in a rebellion against the English in 1906 when the poll tax was raised from a tax per hut to per head (£1 tax on all native men older than 18).Liner notes for ''1906'' and '' ukhandampondo (poll tax)''. Tsakani Mhinga
Tsakani "TK" Mhinga (23 November 1978 – 27 February 2006) was a multiple SAMA award winning South African R&B singer, arranger and songwriter. In her lifetime she unquestionably occupied South Africa's R&B throne and was one of the country's prominent vocalists. She was found dead in a hotel room in Bryanston, Gauteng, Bryanston, Johannesburg by hotel staff on 27 February 2006 of a drug overdose. It remains unclear whether the overdose was intentional or accidental. ''Painted Faces'' () is a 1988 Hong Kong biographical drama film co-written and directed by Alex Law and starring Sammo Hung as his mentor, Master Yu Jim-yuen of the China Drama Academy. For his portrayal as Master Yu, Hung won his second Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards. The film was selected as the Hong Kong entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 62nd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Gloria Bosman
Gloria Bosman ( – 14 March 2023) was a South African jazz singer who began her career singing in a church choir in Soweto. Early life Bosman was born in Mofolo in Johannesburg, but raised in Pimville, Soweto. She sang in her church choir before performing at the Market Theatre in 1993, gaining a scholarship to the Pretoria Technikon to study opera. Career Solo career Bosman released her debut album ''Tranquillity'' in 1999 earning her the award for Best Newcomer and nominations for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Best Female Artist at the South African Music Awards. She won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2000 at the National Arts Festival. In 2001 she released her second album ''The Many Faces of Gloria Bosman'' with Sheer Sound. She produced and composed most of the songs on this album, but also collaborated with Paul Hanmer. He wrote and co-produced two songs on the album.
