Thomas Joseph McCarthy (September 27, 1885 – December 18, 1943) was an American lyricist whose most famous songs include "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It), You Made Me Love You", and "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows", from the now-forgotten ''Oh, Look!'' (1918), starring the Dolly Sisters, based upon the haunting melody from the middle section of Chopin's ''Fantaisie-Impromptu''. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States, McCarthy was a frequent collaborator of composers Harry Tierney and Fred Fisher. Robert David Mirsky (April 7, 1917 – December 14, 1994), known as Robert Mersey, was an American musician, arranger and record producer. Life and career In the 1950s, Mersey worked as an arranger with Leiber and Stoller. In 1959, he recorded " Tracy's Theme", an instrumental written by Robert Ascher which was used in a new NBC production of '' The Philadelphia Story''. The production company thought the tune had hit potential, so they worked out a deal with Columbia Records to issue it as a single. However, Mersey was under contract with the new Big Top label as its musical director and had already released a single, "Bittersweet September," on the label. Devon Music, the publishing firm of Talent Associates owned by David Susskind and Howie Richmond at the time, created a fictitious artist named Spencer Ross, and retained ownership of the pseudonym for potential future use. Ashford & Simpson were an American husband-and-wife songwriting-production team and recording duo of Nickolas Ashford (May 4, 1941 – August 22, 2011) and Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946). Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, and Simpson in the Bronx, New York City. Afterwards, his family relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he became a member of Christ Temple Baptist Church. While there, he sang with a group called the Hammond Singers (named after the founding minister, James Hammond). Later, Nickolas attended and graduated from Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, before pursuing his professional career, where he would ultimately meet his wife, Valerie. Swanee (song)
"Swanee" is an American popular song written in 1919 by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Irving Caesar. It is most often associated with singer Al Jolson. The song was written for a New York City revue called ''Demi-Tasse'', which opened in October 1919 at the Capitol Theater. Caesar, who was then aged 20, claimed to have written the song in about ten minutes riding on a bus in Manhattan, finishing it at Gershwin's apartment. It was written partly as a parody of Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home", including the title in its lyrics. It was originally used as a big production number, with 60 chorus girls dancing with electric lights in their slippers on an otherwise darkened stage. Jolson versions The song had little impact in its first show, but not long afterwards Gershwin played it at a party where Al Jolson heard it. Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II (; July 12, 1895 – August 23, 1960) was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and (usually uncredited) director in the musical theater for almost 40 years.
