Sophienholm is a former manor house and exhibition venue located north on the shore of Lake Bagsværd in Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality in the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. The main building was originally a country home built in 1769 by Johan Theodor Holmskiold who named the house after his wife Sophie Holmskjold. Its next owner, Constantin Brun, had it completely rebuilt at the turn of the 19th century into its present appearance, and it became a lively cultural venue during the Danish Golden Age when his wife, the writer and salonist Friederike Brun, played host to many prominent Danish and foreign cultural figures of the time. Constantin Brun
Johan Christian Constantin Brun (27 November 1746 – 19 February 1836) was a German-Danish merchant. Born in Germany, came to Denmark as Royal administrator of the trade on the Danish West Indies and in the same time built a successful private trading empire during the early Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th century, profiting on Denmark's neutrality. At the time of his death in 1836, Brun was one of the wealthiest persons in Denmark, leaving an estate of more than 2 million Rigsdaler. He was married to Friederike Brun, a writer and prominent salonist during the Danish Golden Age. Early life and career Constantin Brun was born into a poor family on 27 November 1746 in Rostock. Johan Theodor Holmskiold
Johan Theodor Holmskiold (14 June 1731 – 15 September 1793) was a Danish noble, botanist, courtier and administrator. He was noted for his scientific work with fungi and development of the Charlottenborg Botanical Garden. His career included work as director of the Danish Postal Services and the Royal Porcelain Factory. Early life and career Johan Theodor Holm was born in Nyborg on the Danish island of Funen as the oldest of eight children to Nicolai Holm and Cathrine Lucie née v. Lengerchen. He first trained with his father who was a surgeon before studying medicine at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1760. During the last three years of his studies, from 1757 to 1769, he toured Europe with professor Christen Friis Rottbøll (1727-1797) who paid for his travels. Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality (occasionally spelled Lyngby-Tårbæk) is a municipality (Danish, '' kommune'') in the Capital Region of Denmark near Copenhagen on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand (Danish: ''Sjælland''). Friederike Brun
Friederike Brun, née ''Münther'' (3 June 1765 – 25 March 1835), was a Danish author and salonist. She was married to the affluent merchant Constantin Brun and during the Danish Golden Age of the first half of the 19th century she arranged literary salons at Sophienholm, their summer retreat north of Copenhagen. She is known for writing the poem ''Chamouny at Sunrise'' which was the original of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's '' Hymn in the Vale of Chamouni''. Just Mathias Thiele
Justin Mathias Thiele (13 December 1795 – 9 November 1874) was a Danish scholar and librarian. A central personage during the Danish Golden Age, he contributed to Danish cultural life in a number of capacities. He collected and published Danish folk tales with inspiration from the Brothers Grimm and founded the Royal Print Collection, today part of the Danish National Gallery. After the death of Bertel Thorvaldsen, he saved his archives and other papers and based on them he wrote his first biography. He was the father of Thorvald Nicolai Thiele. Schack Von Staffeldt
Schack von Staffeldt (28 March 1769 - 28 December 1826) or Adolph Wilhelm Schack von Staffeldt was a Danish author of two collections of poetry. He is famous for "being late", publishing his collection of poetry intended to introduce Romanticism in Denmark a year after his younger rival, Adam Oehlenschläger did it. Staffeldt was not held in high regard in his own time but is acknowledged as one of the most important Romantic Danish poets by later generations. Louis Philippe de Bombelles (german: Ludwig Philipp, Graf von Bombelles; 1 July 17807 July 1843) was an Austrian count and diplomat. Early life Born in 1780 in Regensburg, he was a member of the noble Bombelles family. He was the son of the French nobleman Marc Marie, Marquis de Bombelles and Baroness Marie Angélique de Mackau. Biography He was brought up in Naples and was briefly an officer here.
