Sonpur is a city and sub-division in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the banks of the River Gandak (River Narayani) and Ganges River in the Saran District. Sonpur was once famous for its longest railway platform, it also hosts Asia's largest cattle fair, which starts on Kartik Poornima. Geography The town is located at at an altitude of 42 metres (137 ft). The river Gandak must have been the route of the movement of Buddha and his followers from the Nepalese Tarai to Magadh. That is why many of the stupas and similar structures, including Ashoka pillars, are found on the banks of the river. Subarnapur District, also called Sonepur District or Sonapur District, is an administrative district in western Odisha state in eastern India. The town of Sonepur is the district headquarters. Sonepur has a rich cultural heritage and is known as the Mandiramalini town (city of temples) of Odisha with more than hundred temples. The people of the Sonepur region are referred to as Sonepuria. Sonepur State
Sonepur also known as Sonpur State, was one of the princely states of India during the period of the British Raj. Its ruler was entitled to a nine gun salute. Formerly it was placed under the Central India Agency, but in 1905 it was transferred to the Eastern States Agency. Its capital was Sonepur, the only significant town in the area. The former state's territory is in the present-day Subarnapur district, Odisha.
