Solomon Islands At The 2016 Summer Olympics
The Solomon Islands competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's ninth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. The delegation included two track and field athletes – Rosefelo Siosi and Sharon Firisua – as well as weightlifter Jenly Tegu Wini. Wini was a returning competitor from the 2012 London Olympics and also led the delegation in those Games. The Solomon Islands, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal. Snatch (weightlifting)
The snatch is the first of two lifts contested in the sport of weightlifting (also known as Olympic weightlifting) followed by the clean and jerk. The objective of the snatch is to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion. There are four main styles of snatch used: snatch (or full snatch), split snatch, power snatch, and muscle snatch. The full lift is the most common style used in competition, while power snatches and muscle snatches are mostly used for training purposes, and split snatches are rarely used. Any of these lifts can be performed from the floor, from the hang position, or from blocks. In competition, only lifts from the floor are allowed. The women's 5000 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 16–19 August at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Summary Almaz Ayana came into this race with the number two time in history, run just two and a half months earlier. That race in Rome came within a second and a half of the world record, so expectations were high. Ayana's strategy was well known to these competitors, she had used it to win the World Championships in 2015, the qualification to these Olympics and to win the 10,000 metres at these Olympics. In particular, Vivian Cheruiyot had experienced it first hand in that 10,000, being relegated to silver. Sharon Kikini Firisua (born 15 December 1993) is a Solomon Islands track and field athlete. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she competed in the 5000 m event. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's marathon. Career In 2013 she was named the Solomon Islands Sportswoman of the Year. The men's 5000 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 16 and 20 August at the Olympic Stadium. Summary Mo Farah entered as the favourite for the race, having won the 2012 Olympic title as well as the last two World Championships 5000 m. He also held the fastest time of the year at 12:59:29 minutes and won the Olympic 10,000 m earlier in Rio. Rosefelo Siosi
Rosefelo Siosi (born 23 August 1996) is a Solomon Islands track and field athlete. At the 2016 Summer Olympics he competed in the Men's 5000 m. He finished in 48th place in a personal best time after he crossed the finish line in 15:47.76. Siosi received a huge crowd ovation at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on 6 August, 2022 when he completed the 5,000m race alone, 4 minutes after event winner Jacob Kiplimo who was completing his lap of honour as Siosi continued to run his race. Comparisons were drawn with Eric Moussambani, nicknamed ‘Eric the Eel’ and ski jumper Eddie the Eagle who similarly captured the hearts of spectators with endeavour rather than achievement at major competitions.
