Sofia Ferreira
Sofia Ferreira (19222010) was a prominent member of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). She was imprisoned for more than 13 years for her opposition to the '' Estado Novo'' regime . Early life Sofia de Oliveira Ferreira was born on 1 May 1922 in Alhandra in the Portuguese municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. A daughter of agricultural workers she was a sister of Georgette Ferreira and Mercedes Ferreira who, like Sofia, both became members of the Communist Party. By the age of ten she was working on farms together with her mother. At the age of twelve, Ferreira went to live with her godparents in Lisbon, doing housework and taking care of the elderly. It was only at this stage that she learnt to read, with help from a neighbour, who also taught her basic mathematics skills. Militão Ribeiro
Militão Bessa Ribeiro, (13 August 1896 – 2 January 1950) born in Murça, was a Portuguese politician, member of the Portuguese Communist Party, during the illegality, that struggled against the fascist regime of '' Estado Novo''. After the death of the former General Secretary of the Party, Bento Gonçalves, in the Concentration camp of Tarrafal, in Portuguese Cape Verde, Militão Ribeiro initiated, along with Álvaro Cunhal and Júlio Fogaça, a major reorganization of the Party, in the early 1940s. Such reorganization, based on the Leninist principles, transformed the Party in the major reference of the resistance against the regime. Carnation Revolution
The Carnation Revolution ( pt, Revolução dos Cravos), also known as the 25 April ( pt, 25 de Abril, links=no), was a military coup by left-leaning military officers that overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime on 25 April 1974 in Lisbon, producing major social, economic, territorial, demographic, and political changes in Portugal and its overseas colonies through the Processo Revolucionário Em Curso. It resulted in the Portuguese transition to democracy and the end of the Portuguese Colonial War. PIDE
The International and State Defense Police ( pt, Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado; PIDE) was a Portuguese security agency that existed during the '' Estado Novo'' regime of António de Oliveira Salazar. Formally, the main roles of the PIDE were the border, immigration and emigration control and internal and external State security. Over time, it came to be known for its secret police activities. The agency that would later become the PIDE was established by the Decree-Law 22992 of August 1933, as the State Surveillance and Defense Police (Polícia de Vigilância e Defesa do Estado) or PVDE. It resulted from the merger of two former agencies, the Portuguese International Police and the Political and Social Defense Police. Álvaro Barreirinhas Cunhal (; 10 November 1913 – 13 June 2005) was a Portuguese communist revolutionary and politician. He was one of the major opponents of the dictatorial regime of the '' Estado Novo''. He served as secretary-general of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) from 1961 to 1992. He was one of the most pro-Soviet of all Western Europe communist leaders, often supporting the Soviet Union's foreign policies, including the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. During the 1970s, Cunhal supported Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev’s political agenda, and strongly opposed Mikhail Gorbachev’s ''perestroika'' policies in the 1980s.
