Société Anonyme Tunisienne de Production et d'Expansion Cinématographique (SATPEC; en, Tunisian Company for Cinematic Production and Expansion) was a Tunisian film production company. History Habib Bourguiba, the president of Tunisia, created SATPEC in 1964 and inaugurated it in 1968. In 1966, SATPEC established Gammarth Studios to promote local film productions. Gammarth was completed in 1968 and originally only processed film in black and white until 1983 when it became equipped to process films in colour. During the 1970s, SATPEC had a monopoly on importing and producing foreign film in Tunisia. In 1973, SATPEC managed the newly re-opened Tunisian Cinémathèque. The government withdrew SATPEC's monopoly in 1981. SATPEC declared bankruptcy in the 1980s and was dissolved in 1994. The cinema of Tunisia began in 1896, when the Lumière brothers began showing animated films in the streets of Tunis. History The first feature-length movie produced in North Africa, ''Les Cinq gentlemen maudits'' (''The Five Accursed Gentlemen''), was filmed in Tunisia by French director Luitz-Morat. In 1922, Tunisian Albert Samama-Chikli directed ''Zohra'' followed by ''Ain Al-Ghazal'' ('' The Girl from Carthage'') in 1924, making him one of the first native North African filmmakers. In 1966, the first Tunisian feature film (95 minutes) ''Al-Fajr'' (''The Dawn'') about the fight against French colonizers, was directed and produced by Omar Khlifi and shot on a 35 mm film. Habib Bourguiba
Habib Bourguiba (; ar, الحبيب بورقيبة, al-Ḥabīb Būrqībah; 3 August 19036 April 2000) was a Tunisian lawyer, nationalist leader and statesman who led the country from 1956 to 1957 as the prime minister of the Kingdom of Tunisia (1956–57) then as the first president of Tunisia (1957–87). Prior to his presidency, he led the nation to independence from France, ending the 75-year-old protectorate and earning the title of "Supreme Combatant". Born in Monastir to a poor family, he attended Sadiki College then Lycée Carnot in Tunis, before obtaining his baccalaureate in 1924. He graduated from the University of Paris and the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) in 1927 and returned to Tunis to practice law. Tarak Ben Ammar ( ar, طارق بن عمّار; born June 12, 1949) is a Tunisian-French film producer and distributor; the owner of French production and distribution company Quinta Communications. He is famous for his interest in artistic movies, especially when they are related to Mediterranean culture or require North African locations. His producing credits include the Franco Zeffirelli film adaptation of ''La Traviata'' and Claude Chabrol's '' Death Rite''.
