Society Of Old Brooklynites
Society of Old Brooklynites is one of the borough's oldest civic organizations. It was formed in 1880. It was founded to celebrate and remember when Brooklyn was its own city. It had an additional purpose of connecting the business community of Brooklyn. History The society was founded by John W. Hunter, the former Mayor of Brooklyn. It holds meetings at the Brooklyn Surrogate's Courtroom. Membership requires individuals to have lived in Brooklyn for at least 25 years. The group rose to prominence combatting the merging of New York City with Brooklyn. It termed this "The Great Mistake of 1898." Notable events the Society of Old Brooklynites has hosted an annual memorial for Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument every year since President Taft dedicated the monument in 1908. Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument
The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument is a war memorial at Fort Greene Park, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It commemorates more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard sixteen British prison ships during the American Revolutionary War. The remains of a small fraction of those who died on the ships are interred in a crypt beneath its base. The Battle of Long Island, also known as the Battle of Brooklyn and the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, was an action of the American Revolutionary War fought on August 27, 1776, at the western edge of Long Island in present-day Brooklyn, New York (state), New York. Bust Of Edward Snowden
The bust of Edward Snowden, called ''Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument 2.0'' by its creators, was an ephemeral, illegally installed public sculpture of Edward Snowden, an American whistleblower who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) and was charged with federal crimes as a result. The bronze-like bust was placed in Fort Greene Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York City, on April 6, 2015. It was attached to a Doric column on the perimeter of the park's Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument, a memorial and crypt which honors and inters the more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who died in the American Revolution while housed on British prison ships. Wilhelmena Rhodes Kelly
Wilhelmena Rhodes Kelly (née Rhodes December 11, 1946 – October 16, 2019) was an African-American genealogist who traced her American lineage to the April 5, 1614, union of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. She was also a member of the Jamestowne Society. In 2019 she became the New York State Regent and a member of the National Board of Management, highest ranking woman of color in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), since its founding in 1890. She was a pioneer of African-American genealogy. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she was a local Brooklyn historian and member of the Society of Old Brooklynites (SOB), one of the borough's oldest civic organizations. Marjorie Parker Smith
Marjorie Parker Smith (March 3, 1916 – January 17, 2009) was an American figure skater who competed in ice dancing, pair skating, single skating, and fours in the latter part of the 1930s. Nearly fifty years later, she again gained championship status in running the 300-yard and the 600-yard dashes. Parker Smith was a member of the first official United States Ice Dancing Championship team and an inductee in the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame, Class of 2009. She also was on the board of directors of the Society of Old Brooklynites where she was a life member. Parker Smith devoted many hours of volunteer service to NYC-based WABC Radio's 'Call For Action' program. She died at age of 92 on January 17, 2009 at her home in Brooklyn, New York. John Oakey (politician)
John Oakey (September 12, 1829 – March 24, 1898) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life Oakey was born on September 12, 1829, in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a lineal descendant of Cromwell officer John Okey, while his mother was a descendant of Hartford founder Thomas Hooker. He moved to Flatbush with his family when he was eight. Oakey studied at Erasmus Hall Academy. He entered Yale College in 1845, graduating from there with honors in 1849. After a preliminary study session, he entered the law office of James Humphrey. He was admitted to the bar in 1851. He then spent two years working as managing clerk for Charles T. Cromwell of New York City.
