Society Of Illustrators Of Los Angeles
The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (SILA) was founded in 1953 by a group of Southern California artists and designers "...to promote the professional status of illustration art as well as foster both philanthropic and educational goals". History Founding In the spring of 1953 a group of leading Southern California Illustrators got together in a meeting room at the Statler Hotel (now the downtown Hilton) to discuss the possibility of forming a professional artists club. The group at the Statler Hotel was composed of L.A.’s most talented illustrators and included Joseph Morgan Henninger, Fritz Willis, George Sheppard, Jacques Kapralik, Bill Tara, Reynold Brown, Ken Sawyer, and others. There were thirteen in all and they began to lead the mushrooming of major art and illustration in Southern California. Reynold Brown
William Reynold Brown (October 18, 1917 – August 24, 1991) was an American realist artist who painted many Hollywood film posters. He was also briefly active as a comics artist. Biography He attended Alhambra High School and refined his drawing under his teacher Lester Bonar. A talented artist, Brown met cartoonist Hal Forrest around 1936-37. Forrest hired Brown to ink (uncredited) Forrest's comic strip ''Tailspin Tommy''. Extensive discussion of the comic strip. Norman Rockwell's sister was a teacher at Alhambra High, and Brown later met Rockwell who advised him to leave cartooning if he wanted to be an illustrator. Bobbie Moline-Kramer
Bobbie Moline-Kramer (born November 4, 1946) is an American artist, lecturer, teacher, and illustrator. Her work includes Japanese Shunga style paintings, gestural abstraction, animal symbolism, and realism. Biography Moline-Kramer was born in Fort Madison, Iowa. Her interest in the professional art field developed after she took a course at a California Community College with the Conceptual Art pioneer John Baldessari and periodic work with Allan Kaprow. She attended Art Center College of Design and later transferred to California State University, Long Beach where she received her BFA with a double major in Biology and Illustration in 1981. Mike Machat
Michael J. Machat is an American artist, author, and pilot. He specializes in aviation art and was a frequent collaborator of R.E.G. Davies on the book series ''An Airline and its Aircraft''. Several aviation museums have permanent collections of Machat's art. Biography Machat grew up in Long Island, New York. He would visit New York airports and draw airplanes as a kid. Machat began flying at age 16, exchanging his drawings and paintings for flying lessons. Joseph Morgan Henninger
Joseph Morgan Henninger (May 15, 1906 – March 7, 1999) was an American artist and illustrator. He was born in Elwood, Indiana and died In Pacific Palisades, California. Henninger was an accomplished painter and sculptor. He also became a commercial artist, an illustrator, and a teacher of "Croquie". He was a founding member and the first president of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (1953). The Society has established an annual award in his name to honor a top illustrator. He was a graduate of l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He had won a four-year scholarship for a painting submitted to the Thomas Award competition. Don Weller is an American illustrator and painter. Background Weller grew up in Pullman, Washington and loved drawing from an early age. He started at Washington State University in their veterinary pre-med program but switched to art after two years. In 1960, after graduating, he moved to Los Angeles. His freelance work was very popular and he had work in three children's books and on five U.S. stamps.
