''Soapstars'' is a British reality television show that aired on ITV (TV network), ITV from 3 September 2001 to 7 November 2001. The series featured thousands of contestants auditioning to be cast as part of a new family—consisting of a mother, father and three teenage children—in the ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale''. The judging panel consisted of drama producer Yvon Grace, casting director Paul de Freitas, and ''Emmerdale'' scriptwriter Bill Lyons. Auditions for ''Soapstars'' began on 8 June 2001 in Sheffield. British actor's trade union Equity (British trade union), Equity released a statement critical of the series, stating it was "an insulting affront to the men and women in our profession who endure low rates of pay, rejection and humiliation in the course of their work, despite their training, experience, dedication and talent." Emmerdale
''Emmerdale'' (known as ''Emmerdale Farm'' until 1989) is a British soap opera that is broadcast on ITV1. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Interior scenes have been filmed at the Leeds Studios since its inception. Exterior scenes were first filmed in Arncliffe in Littondale, and the series may have taken its name from Amerdale, an ancient name of Littondale. Exterior scenes were later shot at Esholt, but are now shot at a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate. The programme is broadcast in every ITV region. ''Popstars'' was a short-lived reality music talent show that was broadcast on ITV in early 2001. It was the first UK series of the international ''Popstars'' franchise, and was billed as a documentary on the formation of a modern pop group. The programme began with audition rounds of aspiring singers performing covers of classic songs before a panel of judges. The best performers were selected to come to London for further rounds of auditions. Over the weeks, the judges eliminated various singers from the auditions until just a few singers were left in contention. ''I Wanna Be a Soap Star'' is a reality television series which debuted on the cable channel SOAPnet in 2004. The show is hosted by ''All My Children'' star and ex-''Dancing with the Stars'' participant, Cameron Mathison. It is based on the British reality series ''Soapstars''. ''I Wanna Be a Soap Star'' The first season debuted on October 16, 2004. Twelve contestants competed in various acting challenges for the prize of a role on ''General Hospital''. The performances, which involved learning how to cry on camera, filming love scenes and fight scenes, among other soap staples, were judged by film and daytime television actress Debbi Morgan, ''General Hospital'' casting director Mark Teschner and agent Michael Bruno.
