''So Ended a Great Love'' (German: ''So endete eine Liebe'') is a 1934 German historical romance film directed by Karl Hartl and starring Paula Wessely, Willi Forst and Gustaf Gründgens.Bock & Bergfelder p.185 The film's sets were designed by the art director Werner Schlichting. The film was made at the Johannisthal Studios in Berlin, with location shooting taking place in Würzburg and Hungary. An English-language version of the film was planned but never produced. Karl Hartl
Karl Hartl (10 May 1899 – 29 August 1978) was an Austrian film director. Life Born in Vienna, Hartl began his film career at the Austrian Sascha-Film company of Alexander Kolowrat and from 1919 was assistant to the Hungarian director Alexander Korda. As a production manager, he in the 1920s accompanied Korda to Berlin, until in 1926 he returned to Vienna to work for his former class-mate director Gustav Ucicky. From 1930 he worked for Universum Film AG (UFA) and debuted as director of ''Ein Burschenlied aus Heidelberg'' ("A Fraternity Song from Heidelberg") starring Hans Brausewetter and Willi Forst, with young Billy Wilder as a screenwriter. Johannisthal Studios
The Johannisthal Studios were film studios located in the Berlin area of Johannisthal. Founded in 1920 on the site of a former airfield, they were a centre of production during the Weimar and Nazi eras. Nearly four hundred films were made at Johannistal during the silent period. Sometimes known as the Jofa Studios, in 1929 they became the base of the newly established German major studio Tobis Film at the beginning of the sound era. After 1945 the studios fell into the Soviet Zone of Germany, and later into the Communist state of East Germany.Bergfelder p.24 The studios were used by the new monopoly film company DEFA. Erna Morena (born Ernestine Maria Fuchs, 24 April 1885 – 20 July 1962) was a German film actress, film producer, and screenwriter of the silent era. She appeared in 104 films between 1913 and 1951. Biography Ernestine Maria Fuchs was born into the middle-class family of Eugenie Fuchs (née. Seyler, 1862–1951) and Friedrich Fuchs (1859–1895) on 24 April 1885. She had a younger brother, Friedrich Fuchs (1890–1948), who became a Brentano researcher. Fuchs went to Munich at age 17 to attend the school of applied arts. She later spent half a year in Paris before moving to Berlin in 1909, where she worked as a nurse. Francis II (german: Franz II.; 12 February 1768 – 2 March 1835) was the last Holy Roman Emperor (from 1792 to 1806) and the founder and Emperor of the Austrian Empire, from 1804 to 1835.
