Drew Smyly
Todd Andrew Smyly (born June 13, 1989), nicknamed "Big Shooter", is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. Prior to his professional career, Smyly played college baseball at the University of Arkansas. He competed for the United States national baseball team, winning the silver medal in the 2011 Pan American Games. The Tigers drafted Smyly in the second round of the 2010 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2012. Smyly was a part of the 2021 World Series champions with the Braves. Ellen Smyly
Ellen Smyly (née Franks, 1815–1901) was an Irish charity worker. She was born on 14 November 1815, the daughter of Matthew Franks. She became a prominent philanthropist, fund-raising and setting up homes and schools for the poor. The Smyly Homes and subsequent Smyly Trust are named after her and her family. At the age of 19 she married the Dublin surgeon Josiah Smyly F.R.C.S.I. (1803-1864). Touched by the poverty and destitution in the city she began her charity work.''The golden bridge: young immigrants to Canada, 1833-1939'' By Marjorie Kohli In 1852 she set up her first bible school in Dublin, and by the 1870s had set up a number of schools and residential homes. Philip Crampton Smyly (colonial Administrator)
Sir Philip Crampton Smyly (28 March 1866–1953) was a British judge and colonial administrator. Career Smyly was the son of the surgeon Sir Philip Crampton Smyly, Surgeon-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria and to successive Lords-Lieutenant of Ireland, and grandson of Ellen Smyly. His mother was the Hon. Selina Marina Plunket, daughter of the 3rd Baron Plunket. Sierra Leone He was Attorney General of Sierra Leone when he was appointed Chief Justice of that protectorate in November 1901. He was knighted in 1905 and held the post until 1911. His photographs from his stay in Sierra Leone are kept as part of the Royal Commonwealth Society collection held in the Cambridge University Library. Gold Coast He was appointed Chief Justice of the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) on 14 September 1911. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), ( ga, Coláiste Ríoga Lianna na hÉireann) is an Irish professional body dedicated to improving the practice of general medicine and related medical specialities, chiefly through the accreditation of physicians by examination. History The "Royal" in the title comes from the Royal Charters that were granted in 1667, by King Charles II of England, and in 1692, by King William III and Queen Mary II of England. It was known as the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland until 1890 when, under the charter of Queen Victoria, it adopted the present title. The College was founded in 1654 by John Stearne, a professor and registrar of Trinity College, Dublin, for the purpose of regulating the practice of medicine in Ireland.
