Madison Smartt Bell (born August 1, 1957, in Nashville, Tennessee) is an American novelist. While established as a writer by several early novels, he is especially known for his trilogy of novels about Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution, published 1995–2004. Early life and education Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Madison Smartt Bell is a graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy. He is a graduate of Princeton University, where he won the Ward Mathis Prize and the Francis Leymoyne Page award, and Hollins University, where he won the Andrew James Purdy fiction award. He later lived in New York City and London before settling in Baltimore, Maryland. Career Bell is a Professor of English at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, where he was Director of the Creative Writing Program from 1998 to 2004. Bell has taught in various creative writing programs, including the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y, and the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. In ... Mike Smartt OBE is a British journalist and broadcaster, and was the founder and editor-in-chief of BBC News Online, the BBC's Internet news service. With Project Director Bob Eggington, he led the team that launched the service in 1997, and held the post of editor-in-chief of BBC News Interactive, which also encompassed interactive television news, until 2004. During this time, News Online won all four interactive news BAFTA awards (the category was scrapped after the fourth win) and most of the world's online news prizes, including the US-based so-called Webby "internet Oscars" on a number of occasions. Originally, many had doubts about the feasibility of the web service, including Smartt's friend and BBC World Editor John Simpson, who described the project as sounding "quite nerdy". Stone Smartt (born October 4, 1998) is an American football tight end for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Old Dominion. Early years Smartt attended Del Oro High School in Loomis, California. During his high school career, he played the quarterback position, throwing for 3,021 yards from scrimmage with 29 touchdowns. He committed to Northern Arizona University to play college football in 2017. College career As a true freshman at NAU in 2017, Smartt played in just 2 games. He transferred to Riverside City in 2018, where he played in 12 games and completed 177 out of 277 for 2,754 yards and 31 touchdowns. He won the NJCAA Athletic Bureau Offensive Player of the Year. USS Smartt (DE-257)
USS Smartt (DE-257) was an of the United States Navy during World War II. She took part in operations in the Atlantic Ocean to protect convoys and other ships from German submarines and fighter aircraft. She performed escort and antisubmarine operations in battle areas before sailing home at the end of the conflict. Namesake Joseph G. Smartt was born on 19 March 1917 in Austin, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 8 October 1940. He attended elimination flight training at Robertson, Missouri, and was appointed an aviation cadet on 28 January 1941. He completed aviation training at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, and was promoted to Ensign on 17 September 1941. He was assigned to Patrol Squadron 11 at Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii and was killed in action on 7 December 1941 during the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor.
