Sling (weapon)
A sling is a projectile weapon typically used to throw a blunt projectile such as a stone, clay, or lead " sling-bullet". It is also known as the shepherd's sling or slingshot (in British English). Someone who specializes in using slings is called a slinger. A sling has a small cradle or ''pouch'' in the middle of two retention cords. A projectile is placed in the pouch. There is a loop on the end of one side of the retention cords. Depending on the design of the sling, either the middle finger or the wrist is placed through a loop on the end of one cord, and a tab at the end of the other cord is placed between the thumb and forefinger. The sling is swung in an arc, and the tab released at a precise moment. This action releases the projectile to fly to the target. The sling is much more than merely an extension of a human arm. A slinger is an American Midwest diner specialty typically consisting of two eggs, hash browns, and a ground beef (or other type of meat) patty, all covered in chili con carne (with or without beans) and generously topped with cheese (cheddar or American) and onions. The eggs can be any style. Hot sauce is usually served on the side. The slinger is considered to be a St. Louis late-night culinary original. It is described as "a hometown culinary invention: a mishmash of meat, hash-fried potatoes, eggs, and chili, sided with your choice of ham, sausage, bacon, hamburger patties, or an entire T-bone steak. The Slingers are a group of fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They starred in their own eponymous short-lived comic book. Fictional team history The Slingers were four teenage superheroes who had been inspired by Spider-Man. The group first appeared in ''Slingers'' #0, a free promotional comic book included in an issue of ''Wizard''. Slinger (formerly Schleisingerville) is a village in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2020 census. Toponymy The village was originally known as Schleisingerville, after Baruch Schleisinger Weil, a merchant and politician who developed the community as a railroad stop in the 1840s and 1850s. Locals sometimes abbreviated the four-syllable name to "Slinger," and on May 3, 1921, the village residents overwhelmingly voted to make Slinger the official name. HMS ''Slinger'' was an experimental catapult ship operated by the Royal Navy during the First World War. After Royal Navy service from 1917 to 1919, she operated as a commercial cargo ship under the names SS ''Niki'' and SS ''Lingfield'' from 1920 until she sank in 1941. Royal Navy service Constructed as a hopper barge, HMS ''Slinger'' was purchased from her builder, Lobnitz and Company, Limited of Renfrew, Scotland, prior to completion. Intending to use her as a test bed for the shipborne launching of aircraft, the Royal Navy fitted her with a 60-foot (18.25-meter) compressed air catapult. USS ''Chatham'' (CVE-32) (originally designated AVG-32, then later ACV-32) was built at the Seattle-Tacoma S/Y, Hull #27, Seattle, Washington and transferred to the United Kingdom 11 August 1943 under lend-lease and renamed HMS ''Slinger'' (D26). Outfitted by the British as a transport carrier, the ship was mined on 5 February 1944 but returned to service, 17 October. In 1945, she was transferred for service in the Pacific as a fighter carrier and was attached to the 30th Aircraft Carrier Squadron. Following the war, she was returned to United States custody on 27 February 1946 and was sold/converted by Robin Line 21 November 1946 as ''Robin Mowbray''. The Singapore Slingers is a Singaporean professional basketball team that currently compete in the ASEAN Basketball League. The Slingers were known as the JobStreet.com Singapore Slingers between 2009 and 2014, due to sponsorship ties with JobStreet.com. The Slingers formerly competed in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL), becoming the first – and so far, the only – Asia-based club to compete in the NBL when they joined at the start of the 2006–07 NBL season. Joey Slinger (born John Edward Slinger, Jr. 1943 at Guelph, Ontario) is a Canadian journalist and author, particularly known as a long-standing humour columnist for the ''Toronto Star''. He first studied at Queen's University but left there after three years without completing a degree. In 1965, Slinger was hired as a reporter for the ''Guelph Mercury'' and remained there for approximately two years. He then attempted to continue his education with journalism studies at Carleton University, but was dismissed by that institution by the start of the September 1967 term. After working with The Canadian Press he joined ''The Globe and Mail'' in 1970, later in the decade transferring to the Toronto Sun where he wrote a humorous gossip column. Jonathan Slinger
Jonathan Charles Slinger (born 15 August 1972) is an English actor. Slinger was born in Accrington, Lancashire. He trained at RADA, graduating in 1994. From there, he went to work at the Royal National Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe. He has also worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including the Complete Works and '' This England: The Histories'' cycles, playing Richard II, Fluellen, Richard Duke of York and Richard III. Michael Slinger is the Associate Dean for Information Services and Technology, Director of the Legal Information Center, and Professor of Law at the Widener University School of Law. He previously spent 13 years as Associate Dean and Director of the Law Library at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University. He is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
