Sky Ladder
''Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang'' is a 2016 documentary film directed by Kevin Macdonald about the life and work of Cai Guo-Qiang known for his artwork with the help of gunpowder. The film was released by Netflix on October 14, 2016. Premise The story is told both through Cai Guo-Qiang's own words, as well as family, friends and observers of his craft, spanning from the artist's childhood in Mao's China just starting out, all the way to present day highly-publicized public art performances on a global scale. Ian Buruma
Ian Buruma (born December 28, 1951) is a Dutch writer and editor who lives and works in the United States. In 2017, he became editor of ''The New York Review of Books'', but left the position in September 2018. Much of his writing has focused on the culture of Asia, particularly that of China and 20th-century Japan. He was the Paul W. Williams Professor of Human Rights and Journalism at Bard College from 2003 to 2017. Early life and education Buruma was born and raised in The Hague, Netherlands. Cai Guo-Qiang
Cai Guo-Qiang (; born 8 December 1957) is a Chinese artist who currently lives and works in New York City and New Jersey. Biography Cai Guo-Qiang was born in 1957 in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. His father, Cai Ruiqin, was a calligrapher and traditional painter who worked in a bookstore. As a result, Cai Guo-Qiang was exposed early on to Western literature as well as traditional Chinese art forms. As an adolescent and teenager, Cai witnessed the social effects of the Cultural Revolution first-hand, personally participating in demonstrations and parades himself. He grew up in a setting where explosions were common, whether they were the result of cannon blasts or celebratory fireworks. He is known for his works on China, and is the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society in New York.
