Aizkraukle Municipality
Aizkraukle Municipality ( lv, Aizkraukles novads) is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2001 by merging town Aizkraukle and Aizkraukle Parish the administrative centre being Aizkraukle. The population in 2020 was 8,024. As a part of the 2021 Latvian administrative reform, the municipalities of Aizkraukle, Jaunjelgava, Koknese, Nereta, Pļaviņas and Skrīveri were merged into the new Aizkraukle Municipality. The new municipality encompasses nearly all of the area of the former Aizkraukle District, with the omission of Kurmene Parish and Valle Parish. Vidzeme
Vidzeme (; Old Latvian orthography: ''Widda-semme'', liv, Vidūmō) is one of the Historical Latvian Lands. The capital of Latvia, Riga, is situated in the southwestern part of the region. Literally meaning "the Middle Land", it is situated in north-central Latvia north of the Daugava River. Skrīveri (german: Römerhof) is a village in Aizkraukle Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, near Riga–Daugavpils Railway. Skrīveri had 2,424 residents in 2022. In Skrīveri there is a Municipal council, Andrejs Upītis Skrīveri Secondary School, music and art school, kindergarten "Sprīdītis", post office, Catholic church, culture house, library, Andrejs Upīts memorial museum. Andrejs Upīts
Andrejs Upīts (4 December 1877, Skrīveri parish, Russian Empire – 17 November 1970, Riga, Latvian SSR) was a Latvian teacher, poet, short story writer. Career and literary activity Andrejs Upīts, while writing for the newspaper "Mājas viesis" under the pseudonym Andrei Araji in 1892, published his first articles, ''Parunas, Skrīveros uzrakstītas'' (Recorded Proverbs of Skrīveri) (No. 15) and ''Kā mūsu senči agrāk Vidzemē dzīvojuši'' (How Our Ancestors Once Lived in Vidzeme) (No. 20). Upīts wrote novels, stories, drama, tragedy, comedy, poetry, satire, journalism, and literary criticism. His children's novel, ''Sūnu ciema zēni'' (''The Boys of Moss Village''), is included in the compulsory reading list of schools. He was one of the more multifaceted Latvian writers. Jorģis Zemitāns
Jorģis Zemitāns (23 February 1873, Skrīveri parish – 16 January 1928, Riga) was an army officer and commander of the Latvian Northern Brigade during the Latvian War of Independence. Biography Jorģis Zemitāns was born on 23 February 1873 in Skrīveri parish, Livonia Governorate. In 1892 he graduated Realschule in Mitau (Jelgava) and joined the army of the Russian Empire in 1892 and completed his military education at the Vilnius Military Academy in 1897. He became an officer in 116th. Malojaroslavec infantry regiment which was stationed in Riga. World War I When World War I started in 1914 he was promoted to captain and together with the whole regiment deployed to the front. Together with XX Army corps he fought in East Prussia. In January 1915, the entire XX Army corps was destroyed in the Augustów forest's and Zemitāns was taken Prisoner of War in February 1915. The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (''novadi'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, plural''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional.
