Skatecycle Bicycle Museum Of America
The Skatecycle, also known as the "Freerider Skatecycle", is the world's first mass-produced Centreless wheel, hubless, self-propelled skate. Invented and patented by Alon Karpman, the Skatecycle was manufactured by Brooklyn Workshop, Inc. based at that time in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Unlike most traditional skateboards, the user does not need to continuously push off the ground to gain and maintain speed. The Skatecycle marks the first time a hub-less machine has been mass-produced, and it is now part of the permanent collection at the Henry Ford Museum and the Bicycle Museum of America. Design The Skatecycle contains a double-jointed twisting axle connected to two standing platforms surrounded by 9" polyurethane wheels. A hubless wheel is present on both sides of the axle. In order to engage the unit, the rider needs to twist their feet inwards and outwards. The Skatecycle measures 32" x 6.5" x 8.5″ (LWH) in dimension and weights 7 1/4 lbs. Centreless Wheel
A centreless wheel is a wheel that lacks a centre or hub, instead being supported and driven at the rim. Design Centreless wheels are toroidal in shape and have one or multiple bearings along the rim. Propulsion can be achieved in different ways, such as with gear teeth along the inner surface of the rim. They can be made lighter than solid and spoked wheels, resulting in better handling and less rotational inertia. The lack of spokes or a traditional hub also allows for more space, which can be used to more easily package a hub motor. While Franco Sbarro was the first to replace vehicles' conventional wheels with hubless wheels in 1989, monowheels, which are similar in practice, predate Sbarro's hubless-wheel vehicles by more than 100 years. The research and development of centreless wheels has not been pursued by any large company due to their complexity, with their use limited to small companies and scientific analyses. The Bicycle Museum of America is a museum in New Bremen, Ohio, USA. The museum is one of the largest private collections of bicycles in the world. History The museum was founded by Jim Dicke II of Crown Equipment Corporation, the international manufacturer of powered industrial forklift trucks, also in New Bremen, who was looking for a nice attraction for the town. In 1997, Dicke acquired more than 150 bicycles and memorabilia at auction of the Schwinn Family Collection previously located at the Navy Pier in Chicago. Many other bicycles have been added to the museum over the years, but the original Schwinn family bikes form the heart of the collection.
