Hauenstein Railway
The Hauenstein Railway is a major railway line in Switzerland connecting the cities of Basel and Olten. The original line was built between 1853 and 1858 under the Unterer Hauenstein Pass, an ancient pass through the Jura Mountains, including a long tunnel under the village of Hauenstein. Between 1912 and 1916 a new line with an long base tunnel was built further east, by-passing the steeper sections of the line. Normally long-distance trains use the base tunnel line, and the old summit line is only used by trains serving the local people ('' Läufelfingerli''). Sometimes during disruptions inter-city trains operate on the old line, but it is reasonably fast and diverted trains take only about four minutes longer than normal services. Freight trains rarely use the summit line because of its large gradients. Baselland Transport AG (BLT) is a Swiss public transport operator in the cantons of Basel-Land, Basel-Stadt, Solothurn and in France. The BLT was founded in 1974, and is owned by the Canton of Basel-Land, located to the south of the city. It transports some 48 million passengers per year, using a fleet of 64 buses and 100 trams over a network of of bus routes and of tram routes. The BLT jointly operates the Basel tram network with Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB), owned by the canton of Basel-Stadt. Whilst the BVB owns and operates the inner-city network, the BLT owns the infrastructure for five longer suburban routes and operates four of these itself, leaving the fifth to the BVB to operate. The Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz, also known by its initialisation TNW, is a Swiss public transport tariff network covering the whole of the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, together with parts of the cantons of Aargau, Jura and Solothurn. The TNW network offers various kinds of tickets, from single tickets to annual season tickets, which are valid on the buses, trams and trains of the operators that are members of the network. Tickets are only valid within the TNW area, and prices are based on zones, with 48 zones covering the whole of the TNW area. One section of Baselland Transport's tram line 10 crosses through France, and this section of the route is included in the TNW network.
