Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, Of Chippenham
Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Chippenham (before 1585 – 1654), was an English politician who sat as MP for New Windsor. He was a prominent member of several of the great trading companies. He was Treasurer of the Navy from 1618 until c. 1627, and was reappointed in 1630. He was created Baronet of Chippenham in 1630. Biography William was the son of William Russell of Surrey and Joan Sanders, and grandson of Maurice Russell of Yaverland, Isle of Wight. He travelled to Russia before attending Gray's Inn in 1631. Williams was sworn a free brother of the East India Company on 20 October 1609, "having formerly bought Sir Francis Cherry's adventure", and became a director on 5 July 1615. He was appointed a director of the North-West Passage Company in July 1612. For many years he traded as an adventurer in the Muscovy Company, but, dissatisfied with the management, withdrew his capital. He afterwards became involved in legal proceedings with the company. Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, Of Wytley
Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Wytley (ca. 1602 – 30 November 1669), was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1625. He was an officer in the Royalist army during the English Civil War and, as Governor of Worcester, he refused entry to the Parliamentary cavalry shortly before the Battle of Powick Bridge (22 September 1642) — the first cavalry skirmish of the Civil War. Biography Russell was the son of Sir Thomas Russell of Strensham and his wife Elizabeth Spencer, daughter of Sir William Spencer. He was educated at Wadham College, Oxford (1620) and trained in the law at the Middle Temple (1622). In 1625 Russell was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Worcestershire. He was created baronet of Wytley on 12 March 1627. The manor of Great Witley passed out of the family, sold by his son Thomas during his lifetime. Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Charlton Park (29 May 1773 – 26 September 1839) was a Scottish physician. Life Born at Edinburgh, he was the sixth son of John Russell of Roseburne, near Edinburgh, a writer to the signet, and uncle to Daniel Eliott. After taking the degree of M.D. at Edinburgh, he went to Calcutta. where he acquired a large medical practice. In London for the cholera epidemic, he was created a baronet on 18 February 1832 for his medical services, and in April was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He died at Charlton Park, Gloucestershire at the age of 66.
