Siphonotreta
Siphonotretida is an extinct order of linguliform brachiopods in the class Lingulata. The order is equivalent to the sole superfamily Siphonotretoidea, itself containing the sole family Siphonotretidae. They were most abundant in the Late Cambrian and Early Ordovician (Furongian to Floian), and were traditionally considered to have gone extinct in the Upper Ordovician ( Ashgill). However, they may have been present as early as Cambrian Stage 4, and as late as the Silurian ( Ludlow). Siphonotretoids were originally placed as a superfamily of Acrotretida, before being raised to their own order. Siphonotretids had simple, rounded shells with an ornamentation of hollow spines. The shell is usually ventribiconvex (both valves convex, the ventral valve moreso) and composed of microscopic granules of apatite. Acrotretida
Acrotretida is an extinct order of linguliform brachiopods in the class Lingulata. They lived from the Lower Cambrian to the Middle Devonian, with their peak diversity from the Middle Cambrian to the Ordovician. Acrotretida contains the sole superfamily Acrotretoidea. Many acrotretides have a tall and conical ventral valve with a pedicle opening at the apex, while the dorsal valve was convex to a much lesser degree. Based on preserved muscle scars, the lateral muscles are shifted back and condensed into large bundles of tendons. These replace the stout, column-like central muscles, which are present in other linguliforms but apparently absent in acrotretides. The larval shell, which is retained near the pedicle opening, has a strongly pitted texture. The adult shell is smooth and has a rounded outline, and is phosphatic like other linguliforms. Miaolingian
The Miaolingian is the third Series of the Cambrian Period, and was formally named in 2018. It lasted from about to million years ago and is divided in ascending order into 3 stages: the Wuliuan, Drumian, and Guzhangian. The Miaolingian is preceded by the unnamed Cambrian Series 2 and succeeded by the Furongian series. Definition A number of proposals for fossils and type sections were made before it was formally ratified in 2018. The most promising fossil markers were seen to be the respective first appearances of either trilobite species ''Ovatoryctocara granulata'' or ''Oryctocephalus indicus'', which both have an age close to million years ago. In geology, the Arenig (or Arenigian) is a time interval during the Ordovician period and also the suite of rocks which were deposited during this interval. History The term was first used by Adam Sedgwick in 1847 with reference to the "Arenig Ashes and Porphyries" in the neighbourhood of Arenig Fawr, in Merioneth, North Wales.
