Sijbekarspel
Sijbekarspel is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 10 km northwest of Hoorn. Sijbekarsel consists of one long road, with a ribbon of buildings around it. On the east, it is connected to Benningbroek. History The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Siboutskerspel, and means "parish of Sybout (person)." Sijbekarspel developed in the 11th century as a peat excavation settlement. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with ridge turret. The nave dates from 1547. The wooden ridge turret was added in 1861 after the tower was demolished. Sijbekarspel was home to 372 people in 1840. In 1887, a joint railway station with Benningbroek opened on the Hoorn to Medemblik railway line. The line closed in 1941. Benningbroek
Benningbroek is a village in the northwest Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Medemblik, North Holland about 40 km north of Amsterdam. On the western side, Benningbroek has merged with Sijbekarspel. The village was first mentioned around 1338 as Bennenbroech, and means "swampy land of the people of Benne (person)". Bennebroek developed in the 11th century as a peat excavation settlement. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with a tall spire from the 16th century. The choir was demolished at the end of the 18th century. Benningbroek was home to 461 people in 1840. Wognum
Wognum () is a former municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Wognum received City rights in the Netherlands, city rights in 1392 but lost them in 1426. In 2007 it merged with the municipalities of Medemblik and Noorder-Koggenland into the surviving municipality of Medemblik. Hauwert
Hauwert is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 7 km north of Hoorn. History Hauwert is thought to have been founded between 950 and 1050. It was first mentioned around 1312 as Oudeboxwoude. The etymology is unknown. In the past Oude (old) was added to distinguish from Nibbixwoud. The Dutch Reformed church was first mentioned in 1395. The current church dates from the 15th century. The tower is from the 16th century and has been enlarged during the 17th century. Hauwert was home to 301 people in 1840. From 1816 to 1979, it was part of the municipality of Nibbixwoud and from 1979 to 2007 it was part of the municipality of Noorder-Koggenland. Twisk
Twisk is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 10 km north of Hoorn. History It was first mentioned between 1243 and 1245 as Twisc, and means "between/on the border". It may relate to the name of a stream. Twisk developed in the 11th century as a peat excavation settlement on the stream ridge from Abbekerk to Medemblik. The parcels of land are not a straight angle to the main road, therefore many houses and farms are built at an angle. The Dutch Reformed church is a stretched single aisled church with a brick spire. The nave probably dates from the late 14th century. The church was elevated and enlarged in the early 16th century. The plaster of the tower was removed during the restoration of 1976 to 1981. Opperdoes
Opperdoes is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 12 km north of Hoorn. It has a certain fame for its local variety of potatoes, "Opperdoezer Ronde". The village was first mentioned in the late 11th century as Those, and means "bog with moss". Opper (upper) could have been added to distinguish from Nederdoes, a village lost in the Zuiderzee. History The exact age of the village of Opperdoes is hard to determine. The village used to be located very close to the sea, and the area has been flooded several times. Initial settlements seem to have been abandoned after the year 300 because of large floods. New villages were later built on terps. Opperdoes used to be located 4 or 5 kilometres from the sea-dike that existed around 781. Midwoud
Midwoud is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 7 km north of Hoorn. History The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Midwoude, and means "middle forest". Middle is used, because it is located between Oostwoud and Nibbixwoud. Midwoud developed in the Late Middle Ages as a peat excavation settlement. In 1984, the Dutch Reformed church burnt down, and only the Neoclassical architecture, neoclassic church tower from 1867 remained. A new church was built in 1987 near the old church leaving the tower detached. Midwoud was home to 218 people in 1840. It was an independent municipality. In 1979, the area of that municipality became part of Noorder-Koggenland and Wognum. In 1990, houses were built in the area between Midwoud and Oostwoud, thus forming a single build-up area. Abbekerk is a small city in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 9 km north of Hoorn.
