Sierra De Gata, Comarca
Sierra de Gata is a ''comarca'' at the northern end of province of Cáceres in Extremadura, one of Spain's seventeen Autonomous Communities. The mountain range of Sierra de Gata is in the area and has given its name to the comarca. The main town is Moraleja. This comarca borders with Portugal in the west in the area of the Portuguese Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve. There are linguistic affinities between this comarca and neighboring Las Hurdes. Comarcas Of Extremadura
In Spain, a ''comarca'' (, sing. ''comarca'') is either a traditional territorial division without any formal basis, or a group of municipalities, legally defined by an autonomous community for the purpose of providing common local government services. In English, a comarca is equivalent to a district, county, area or zone. Legally defined comarcas The large majority of legally defined comarcas are in Catalonia (42) and Aragon (33)), and are regulated by law and are governed by a comarcal council with specified powers. Hoyos
Hoyos is a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain. According to the 2005 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 988 inhabitants. It is the administrative capital of the Sierra de Gata. History It was part of the Dukedom of Alba as the First Duke of Alba, Don García Álvarez de Toledo took possession of the City of Coria together with all its villages, which included Acebo, Hoyos and Perales.
