Daniel Sickles
Daniel Edgar Sickles (October 20, 1819May 3, 1914) was an American politician, soldier, and diplomat. Born to a wealthy family in New York City, Sickles was involved in a number of scandals, most notably the 1859 homicide of his wife's lover, U.S. Attorney Philip Barton Key II, whom Sickles gunned down in broad daylight in Lafayette Square, across the street from the White House. He was acquitted after using temporary insanity as a legal defense for the first time in United States history. Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Sickles became one of the war's most prominent political generals, recruiting the New York regiments that became known as the Excelsior Brigade in the Army of the Potomac. Despite his lack of military experience, he served as a brigade, division, and corps commander in some of the early Eastern campaigns. Nicholas Sickles (September 11, 1801 – May 13, 1845) was an American attorney and politician in the U.S. state of New York. From 1835 to 1837, he represented New York in the United States House of Representatives for one term. Biography Sickles was born in Kinderhook, New York. He attended private schools and Kinderhook Academy before studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced practice in Kingston, New York. Congress He was elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving from December 7, 1835 to March 3, 1837. Noel Douglas Sickles (January 24, 1910 – October 3, 1982) was an American commercial illustrator and cartoonist, best known for the comic strip '' Scorchy Smith''. Sickles was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. Largely self-taught, his career began as a political cartoonist for the ''Ohio State Journal'' in the late 1920s. At that time he met and shared a studio with cartoonist Milton Caniff, then working for the ''Columbus Dispatch''. Sickles followed Caniff, creator of the ''Terry and the Pirates'' comic strip, to New York City in 1933, where both men initially worked as staff artists for the Associated Press. ''Scorchy Smith'' Sickles was assigned to the action/adventure comic ''Scorchy Smith'', whose creator, John Terry, was suffering from tuberculosis. Teresa Bagioli Sickles (1836 – February 5, 1867) was the wife of Democratic New York State Assemblyman, U.S. Representative, and later U.S. Army Major General Daniel E. Sickles. William Sickles
William H. Sickles (October 27, 1844 – September 26, 1938) was a soldier in the Union Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the American Civil War. Biography Sickles was born on October 27, 1844 in Danube, New York but his official residence was listed as Fall River, Wisconsin. He joined the US Army in May 1861, and mustered out in July 1865. Sickles served as justice of the peace in Orting, Washington. Sickles died on September 26, 1938 at the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting and is buried there in Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery, near his comrade and fellow MOH recipient Albert O'Connor.
