Shopski Cove
Shopski Cove ( bg, Шопски залив, Shopski zaliv, ) is a 2.6 km wide cove indenting for 1.9 km the southwest coast of Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, between Triangle Point and the westernmost extremity of the moraine spit of Provadiya Hook protecting Yankee Harbour. Shape enhanced as a result of Bravo Glacier’s retreat in the late 20th and early 21st century. The area was visited by early 19th century sealers operating from Yankee Harbour. The feature is named "after the Shoppe Region in Western Bulgaria." |
Seal Hunting
Seal hunting, or sealing, is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Seal hunting is currently practiced in ten countries: United States (above the Arctic Circle in Alaska), Canada, Namibia, Denmark (in self-governing Greenland only), Iceland, Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden. Most of the world's seal hunting takes place in Canada and Greenland. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) regulates the seal hunt in Canada. It sets quotas (total allowable catch – TAC), monitors the hunt, studies the seal population, works with the Canadian Sealers' Association to train sealers on new regulations, and promotes sealing through its website and spokespeople. The DFO set harvest quotas of over 90,000 seals in 2007; 275,000 in 2008; 280,000 in 2009; and 330,000 in 2010. The actual kills in recent years have been less than the quotas: 82,800 in 2007; 217,800 in 2008; 72,400 in 2009; and 67,000 in 2010. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is an interdisciplinary body of the International Science Council (ISC). SCAR coordinates international scientific research efforts in Antarctica, including the Southern Ocean. SCAR's scientific work is administered through several discipline-themed ''science groups''. Shopi
Shopi or Šopi ( South Slavic: Шопи) is a regional term, used by a group of people in the Balkans. The areas traditionally inhabited by the ''Shopi'' or ''Šopi'' is called ''Shopluk'' or ''Šopluk'' (Шоплук), a mesoregion, roughly where Bulgaria, Serbia and North Macedonia meet. In 2011 census in Serbia they are registered as a separate ethnicity and 142 people declared themselves as belonging to this ethnicity. Bravo Glacier
Bravo Glacier is a glacier on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica extending 2.1 km in northwest-southeast direction and 2.3 km in southwest-northeast direction and draining the south slopes of Dryanovo Heights to flow southeastwards into Shopski Cove. The feature was probably named after an officer in the Chilean ship ''Lientur'' that took part in the 1952-53 Chilean survey of Yankee Harbour. Yankee Harbour
Yankee Harbour is a small inner harbour entered from Shopski Cove between Glacier Bluff and Spit Point, indenting the south-west side of Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It is long in west-south-west to east-north-east direction, and wide, and is bounded by Provadiya Hook to the south-west, Parvomay Neck to the north and east, and Kladara Beach to the south. History Yankee Harbour was known to both American sealers and the British (who called it ''Hospital Cove'') as early as 1820, and this name is now established in international usage. Provadiya Hook
Provadiya Hook ( bg, Провадийска коса, Provadiyska Kosa, ) is a gravel barrier spit separating the inner Yankee Harbour in Greenwich Island, Antarctica from the outer Shopski Cove and McFarlane Strait. Boomerang-shaped, extending 700 m northwestward from the southwest extremity of Oborishte Ridge to a point forming the southeast side of the entrance to Shopski Cove, and named Provadiya Point in association, then extending 500 m northwards to end up in Spit Point, the latter forming the south side of the entrance to Yankee Harbour.
