The Shire of Winton is a local government area in Central West Queensland, Australia. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1887. Its administrative centre is located in the town of Winton. It is named after Winton, Dorset, England, the birthplace of Robert Allen, the first white settler in the Winton (Queensland) area. The major industry in the shire is beef production and some opal mining. There has been some development of the known oil and gas reserves in the region. History The Winton Division was created on 23 September 1886 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', Winton Division became the Shire of Winton on 31 March 1903. It subsequently lost an area in its northwest to the Shire of McKinlay on 24 July 1930. Winton, Dorset
Winton is a suburb of Bournemouth in Dorset, England (historically in Hampshire). It lies approximately north of Bournemouth town centre, along Wimborne Road (the A347). Winton is to the east of Wallisdown, Victoria Park and Talbot Woods and south of Moordown. Winton gave its name to Winton, Queensland. History The name Winton was derived from Wintoun Castle in Scotland, which was home to the Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, a relative of the Talbot family: landowners who started the development of Winton. At the beginning of the 19th century the area was just rough heathland, with just a track linking ancient Moordown Village to Horseshoe Common. In 1805 this all changed when a new main road through Winton was put in and named Muscliff Road (today it is known as Wimborne Road). Geography The locality is on the Kennedy Developmental Road, northwest of the state capital Brisbane and southeast of the regional centre of Mount Isa. Lying within the locality is the former site of Collingwood (), a town that lost out in regional competition to its neighbour, Winton. It had been given up by about 1900. The region in which Middleton lies is a circular zone that has been shown to be a crustal anomaly. Corfield is a town and locality in the Shire of Winton in north-western Queensland, Australia. In the , Corfield had a population of 183 people. Geography The town is on the Kennedy Developmental Road—the road linking Winton and Hughenden— north west of the state capital Brisbane and south west of the regional centre of Townsville. The Landsborough Highway also passes through the locality (but not through the town) merging with the Kennedy Developmental Road just before crossing into Winton. The Central Western railway line passes through the south of the locality to its terminus at Winton railway station. The Richmond–Winton Road follows a section of the north-western boundary. Collingwood is a former town in the Channel Country in Central West Queensland, Australia, in the Shire of Winton. Collingwood was founded in the 1870s, and it was hoped that the town would thrive and grow into a regional centre that would foster the development of pastoral activity in the Diamantina region, an industry of great local importance to this day. However, Collingwood ultimately failed as a town and was given up after only about two decades of existence.
