The Shire of Winchelsea was a local government area about southwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1860 until 1994. History Winchelsea was first incorporated as a road district on 9 November 1860, and became a shire on 27 May 1864. On 6 May 1919, part of the shire was annexed to the then new Shire of Otway, and on 31 May 1927, parts were annexed to the Shire of Barrabool. On 1 April 1989, Winchelsea annexed parts of the Shire of Barrabool, and was re subdivided into three ridings. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room. Pennyroyal, Victoria
Pennyroyal is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia. Most of the locality is situated in the Surf Coast Shire; a small section is situated in the Shire of Colac Otway. In the 2016 census, Pennyroyal had a population of 86. Pennyroyal is a small rural locality; while it once had a post office, church, school, and railway station for carting local produce, they have long since closed. Pennyroyal Creek Post Office opened on 15 August 1887 and closed on 14 January 1955. St Michael's Church of England opened in 1885 and closed in 1950. Penny Royal Creek State School (No. 1204) opened in 1873, moved to a new site in 1916, and closed in 1982. The Birregurra-Forrest railway line opened in 1891. Ombersley is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia. Most of the locality is in Colac Otway Shire, with a portion being in adjacent Surf Coast Shire. In the 2016 census, Ombersley had a population of 97. Ombersley Post Office opened on 1 May 1884 and closed on 30 March 1963. Mount Hesse Station, a historic homestead listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and classified by the National Trust of Australia, is located within Ombersley. It was developed as a pastoral property around 1837, and the first homestead was built in the early 1840s. A succession of still surviving outbuildings followed thereafter, including a store (1843), shepherd's hut (1849), stables (1849, extended in 1873), woolshed (1852) and gate lodge (1873). Lorne is a seaside town on Louttit Bay in Victoria, Australia. It is situated about the Erskine River and is a popular destination on the Great Ocean Road tourist route. Lorne is in the Surf Coast Shire and at the had a population of 1,114 but this figure grows during the holiday season. History Prior to British settlement, Lorne was part of the traditional lands of the Gadubanud or King Parrot people of the Cape Otway coast according to Ian Clark, although many popular websites report that the area was occupied by the Kolakngat Aborigines. Lorne is situated on a bay named after Captain Louttit, who sought shelter there in 1841 while supervising the retrieval of cargo from a nearby shipwreck. Deans Marsh is a town in Victoria, Australia, located inland from Lorne. At the 2016 census, Deans Marsh had a population of 269. Deans Marsh is part of the Otway Harvest Trail, with the Pennyroyal Raspberry Farm and the Gentle Annie Berry Gardens nearby. Buckley, Victoria
Buckley is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. It was formerly known as Laketown. In the 2016 census, Buckley had a population of 211 people. Laketown A hotel called the Lady of the Lake Hotel opened on Barrabool Road at what is now Buckley in 1854, and the area began to be known as Laketown. The hotel reportedly flourished, being located on the road to Colac, and became a social centre for the area. The hotel was a coach stop on the road to Colac, and the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly stopped there in 1870 while his party's horses were being rested. A post office opened at Laketown on 15 March 1872, and a store as added around the same period. Boonah is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. History The locality was the base for various sawmilling operations from the 1880s. The Boonah State School opened on 15 August 1882, servicing families working at the Benwerrin coal mine, the three local sawmills and on local farms. It closed in 1927 due to falling attendance. Birregurra, Victoria
Birregurra is a town on Gulidjan Country in Victoria, Australia approximately south-west of Melbourne. The town is located within the Colac Otway Shire. At the 2016 census, Birregurra had a population of 828. Birregurra is an Aboriginal word thought to mean ‘kangaroo camp'. In 1839, the Wesleyan missionaries and colonial government established the Buntingdale Mission Station in the area - Victoria's first Aboriginal mission. A Post Office opened in the area on 1 October 1858 and was renamed Mount Gellibrand in 1894, a few days before another office nearby was opened as Birregurra. Benwerrin, Victoria
Benwerrin is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. The original 1840s main track to Lorne passed through Benwerrin. The track was resurfaced with bluestone in 1877, but eventually bypassed for an easier alignment to the coast. Some remnants of the former track remain today, and are listed on the Surf Coast Shire's heritage inventory. Benwerrin Post Office opened on 1 November 1886 and closed on 30 June 1927. Coal was found at Benwerrin in 1895, when mining began there on a small scale. The Great Western Coal Company being formed to mine it in 1897, and it initially carried the coal to Deans Marsh railway station by wagon. A second company was formed to build a tramway to the Forrest railway line in September 1898, but it went into liquidation by March 1899. Bambra, Victoria
Bambra is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Bambra had a population of 101 people. It is named after an Aboriginal word for mushroom. The locality was initially named "Retreat", but was later renamed Bambra after an Aboriginal word for mushroom. The area was opened up for selection in the 1860s. Bambra State School was opened on 20 September 1866, closed temporarily in 1945–1946, and closed permanently in 1969. The Bambra Chapel, a Bible Christian Church, was opened in 1868, and became a Methodist church in 1903. A second church, the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, held its first service on 25 May 1902. Bambra Post Office opened on 23 September 1892 and closed on 29 September 1973. The churches have also closed, although one survives as a private house.
