Shire Of Sandstone
The Shire of Sandstone is a local government area in the eastern Mid West region of Western Australia, about northeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Sandstone. History Gold was found in the surrounding area in the late 1800s with the population of the district growing to 6,000 - 8,000 people during this time. The Black Range Road District was gazetted on 28 March 1897, receiving some land from North Coolgardie in 1908, and Leonora-Mount Malcolm in 1930. On 1 July 1961, it was renamed Sandstone and became a Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. The Mid West region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast of Western Australia, about north and south of its administrative centre of Geraldton, Western Australia, Geraldton and inland to east of Wiluna, Western Australia, Wiluna in the Gibson Desert. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. As a result most register records include dates and details from the three different processes. Youanmi, Western Australia
Youanmi is an abandoned town in the Murchison region of Western Australia. The town was gazetted in 1910 but abandoned in 1942, after the local gold mine was closed. History The first Europeans to visit the Youanmi area were the Robert Austin party in 1854, followed by the John Forrest's expedition in 1869, which passed through in search of Ludwig Leichhardt and his party. Gold was discovered at Youanmi in 1894 or 1895 by prospector Tom Payne. The discovery site was the Golden Crown Mine, southwest of the current mine mill. Activity in subsequent years was subdued until a major movement of prospectors into the area in late 1907. By 1908 however, the Youanmi Gold Mine was set up and the local population grew to such an extent that the local Youanme Progress Committee requested the declaration of a townsite in 1910. Sandstone, Western Australia
Sandstone is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia east of Mount Magnet and north of the state capital, Perth. At the , Sandstone and the surrounding Shire of Sandstone had a population of 89 people, including 19 families. Sandstone is the administrative centre and only town in the Shire of Sandstone local government area. Overview The town was formed as a result of the gold strike at The Adelaide mine, owned by George Dent and the Hack brothers, Wilton and Theodore. All three of them were from South Australia and had spent eight years in the area digging for gold. They struck a reef on New Year's Day in 1903 and news quickly spread. Within a month, 60 acres of land around their lease had been pegged, from word of mouth.
