The Shire of Maffra was a local government area about north-northwest of Sale, the major regional centre in central Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1875 until 1994. History Maffra was incorporated as a shire in October 1875. Part of its Eastern Riding was annexed to the Shire of Avon on 2 May 1917. On 2 December 1994, the Shire of Maffra was abolished, and along with the City of Sale, the Shires of Alberton and Avon, and parts of the Shire of Rosedale, was merged into the newly created Shire of Wellington. Central Gippsland
The area known as Central Gippsland, also termed North Gippsland, is a region of Gippsland in Victoria, Australia, roughly corresponding to Shire of Wellington. Often this region is considered part of a larger "East Gippsland". Central Gippsland occupies a broad stretch of plains between the Latrobe Valley to the west and the Gippsland Lakes to the east and between the Great Dividing Range to the north and Bass Strait ( Ninety Mile Beach) to the south. Near the mouth of the Latrobe River is the main town Sale, which has a population of about 19,600 (including Wurruk and Longford), a nearby air force base, and as a centre for the offshore gasfields in Bass Strait. Newry, Victoria
Newry is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on Newry - Boisdale Road, north west of Maffra, in the Shire of Wellington. The town had a population in 2016 of 427 people. History The first survey of the area was conducted in 1860 by W. Dawson. A fresh survey was conducted in 1861 by C. P. Rafferty in 1861, and further surveying was performed by G. Hastings in 1863. The survey by Rafferty set aside occupied land for a township reserve, which was surveyed into blocks by G.T. Jones in 1867. 16 blocks were sold in 1867, and blocks were sold again in 1871. The Post Office opened on 1 February 1869 as Upper Maffra and was renamed Maffra Upper in 1889 and Newry in 1894. A brick church was built in 1885. Licola, Victoria
Licola is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on Licola Road, in the Shire of Wellington, 254 kilometres east of Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Licola and the surrounding area had a population of 11. Overview The Lions Club owns a large section of land in Licola and operates a youth camp on site, the Licola Wilderness Village, which is immediately surrounded by farm land. Heyfield, Victoria
Heyfield is a town in Victoria, Australia, with a population of 1,993. It is east of Melbourne, in the Shire of Wellington local government area. Located on the Thomson River, Heyfield is a gateway to the Victorian High Country. History In 1841 an early settler, James McFarlane, described the district as resembling "a field of waving corn", and called it "Hayfield". By 1866, the spelling had changed to "Heyfield", but exactly when and why this happened is unclear. It may have been renamed to reflect the spelling of the nearby Heyfield Station. In 1866, McFarlane's property was taken over by James Tyson, a former member of the Queensland Legislative Council, a pastoralist, and considered Australia's first self-made millionaire. Briagolong is a town in the Australian state of Victoria, located 20 kilometres north of Maffra and some 270 kilometres east of Melbourne, in the Shire of Wellington region of Gippsland. Allan McLean (Australian Politician)
Allan McLean (3 February 1840 – 13 July 1911) was an Australian politician who served as the 19th Premier of Victoria, in office from 1899 to 1900. He was later elected to federal parliament, where he served as a government minister under George Reid. McLean was born in Argyll, Scotland, and arrived in Australia as a child. His family settled in the Gippsland region of Victoria, and he eventually acquired a sheep station near Lake Wellington. McLean was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1880 and was promoted to cabinet in 1890, serving under James Munro, William Shiels, and George Turner. He replaced Turner as premier in 1899, but was defeated at the following year's general election. McLean entered the new federal parliament in 1901, as a member of the Protectionist Party.
