The Shire of Kerang was a local government area located in northwestern Victoria, Australia, along the Murray River. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. From 1966 onwards, Kerang itself was managed by a separate entity; the Borough of Kerang. History The Swan Hill Road District, which initially covered most of northwestern Victoria, was incorporated on 8 July 1862, and became a shire on 14 August 1871. The Shire of Gordon was severed and incorporated on 26 May 1885, from parts of the East and West Loddon Ridings, with the Shire of Mildura following suit on 10 January 1890, from the Lower Murray Riding. The Shire of Castle Donnington was severed on 30 May 1893, from the remainder of those three ridings. The remainder of the shire was renamed the Shire of Kerang on 31 December 1898. The Mallee covers the most northwesterly part of Victoria, bounded by the South Australian and New South Wales borders. Description and history Quambatook is located on the Avoca River in the Shire of Gannawarra local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. Murrabit, Victoria
Murrabit is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. It is on the Murray River, from the state capital, Melbourne and from Swan Hill. Murrabit is in the Shire of Gannawarra local government area and at the , Murrabit and the surrounding area had a population of 201, declining from 330 just five years earlier. The township was established in 1925 as a railway station on the Kerang-Stony Crossing rail line. In accordance with the legislation authorising the railway, the town had to be no closer than from the Victoria-New South Wales border. The railway crossed the Murray River into New South Wales via an historic bridge at Gonn Crossing, just north of the town. The lift-span bridge was opened in 1926 and was used for both rail and road traffic until 1964, but became road only when the railway was closed. Macorna, Victoria
Macorna is a small community within the Shire of Gannawarra, Australia. There are only a couple of houses, but there is a football/netball club, cricket club, Landcare group, fire station and a pony club. The town is 85 metres above sea level. Lalbert, Victoria
Lalbert is a very small farming town in the north-west of Victoria, Australia, within the Shire of Gannawarra. Lalbert is situated west of Kerang on the Swan Hill-Donald Road. At the , Lalbert had a population of 151 declining from 224 just five years earlier. History Named by Major Mitchell during his trek through the area in 1836, the name Lalbert (or L'Albert as it was originally spelt) is thought to derive from the aboriginal word for the creeper that grew on the mallee trees at the time. The first white people to live in the district were the Ham brothers who took out a pastoral lease there in 1846. By 1850, their sheep run had been subdivided into three separate pastoral properties: the Lalbert, Titybong and Towaninnie runs. The 1865 gazetteer recorded that there were only around 40 white people in the district at the time, all of whom were employed on the sheep stations. Lake Charm is a small town situated on the Murray Valley Highway, just west of a lake of the same name. Located in the northwest of Victoria, Australia, within the Shire of Gannawarra. Koondrook ( ) is a town situated on the Murray River, Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Gannawarra local government area, north west of the state capital, Melbourne.
