Shire Of Cocos
The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a local government area which manages local affairs on the Australian external territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands (; post code: 6799). The island is grouped with Western Australia but is administered by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and an Administrator. The Shire covers an area of in the Indian Ocean, about north-west of Perth and south-west of Java in Indonesia. The current shire president is Seriwati Iku, who was elected in October 2017 as the first woman to hold the position. History From the 19th century onwards, the islands were owned by the Clunies-Ross family, and in 1886 were granted to them in perpetuity by Queen Victoria. The Clunies-Ross family were the original settlers of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a small archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Natasha Louise Griggs (born 24 January 1969) is an Australian former politician and the administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories from 2017 to 2022. Griggs was first elected at the 2010 federal election as a member of the House of Representatives for the division of Solomon, representing the Country Liberal Party. Cocos Malays are a community that form the predominant group of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which is now a part of Australia. Today, most of the Cocos Malay can be found in the eastern coast of Sabah, Malaysia, because of diaspora originating from the 1950s during the British colonial period. Seri Wati Iku (sometimes given as Seriwati Iku) is a politician from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia, was President of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Shire Council from 2017 to 2019. Career Iku was first elected to a position on the Council in 2015 and is one of only a handful of women to serve on the body since it was founded in 1992. Home Island, also known locally as Pulu Selma, is one of only two permanently inhabited islands of the 26 islands of the Southern Atoll of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian external territory in the central-eastern Indian Ocean.
