The Shire of Booringa was a local government area in the Maranoa region of Queensland, Australia. The largest town and home of the shire administration was Mitchell. It existed from 1879 to 2008. The shire is now part of the Maranoa Region. History Wallumbilla Division was established on 11 November 1879 as one of the original divisions proclaimed under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 3217. On 21 May 1880, part of Wallumbilla Division was separated to create Bungil Division. Wallumbilla Division was renamed Booringa Division on 18 July 1891. The name ''Booringa'' is the Aboriginal name for the country around Mitchell. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', Booringa Division became the Shire of Booringa on 31 March 1903. Mitchell is a rural town and locality in the Maranoa Region, Queensland, Australia. The town services the local area, a cattle and sheep farming district. In the , the locality of Mitchell had a population of 1,031 people. Geography Mitchell is on the Warrego Highway, west of Brisbane, 441 kilometres (274 mi) west of Toowoomba, 230 kilometres (143 mi) west of Miles, 89 kilometres (55 mi) west of Roma and 180 kilometres (112 mi) east of Charleville. The Warrego Highway passes through town to form the main street, Cambridge Street. The Maranoa River flows around the northern and eastern sides of the town before eventually flowing into the Balonne River. It was published in Roma from 27 March 1875 to 1948, before continuing as the ''Western Star'' from 1948 to the present day. Geography The town is in South West Queensland, west of the state capital Brisbane and west of the regional centre of Roma.
