The Shire of Barrabool was a local government area about southwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1853 until 1994. History Barrabool was incorporated as the second road district in the colony on 28 December 1853, and became a shire on 13 June 1865. On 31 May 1927, it annexed parts of the Shire of Winchelsea. Its shire offices were located on Grossmans Road, near the Surf Coast Highway in Torquay, although almost all of Torquay was within the City of South Barwon. The Barwon South West is an economic rural region located in the southwestern part of Victoria, Australia. The Barwon South West region stretches from the tip of the Queenscliff Heads to the border of South Australia. Freshwater Creek, Victoria
Freshwater Creek is a small rural community in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Freshwater Creek had a population of 414 people. The community comprises farming and rural properties, with a small township on the Anglesea Road and Dickins Road. The township has several shops and a cafe. The community volunteer CFA building is located on Dickins Road. Alongside is the Community Hall, tennis courts, BBQ, public toilets and playground. The Freshwater Creek Riding Club is next door to the Community Hall with their cross country course along Duneed Creek. Opposite is Red Gum Run Arena Polo. Fairhaven, Victoria
Fairhaven is a coastal locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2021 census, Fairhaven had a population of 390 people. The village is a popular holiday destination, with many homes being used for that purpose. It adjoins Fairhaven Beach, which at 6 km long is the longest beach on the Great Ocean Road. The village is separated from adjoining Aireys Inlet by the Painkalac Creek, and development in recent years has seen Fairhaven become increasingly joined to the Aireys Inlet township. Fairhaven Beach is a popular surfing destination, and the Fairhaven Surf Lifesaving Club, which was founded in 1957, has been described as Fairhaven's "social centre". The club operated out of a volunteer-built clubhouse from 1960 until 2012, when the building was demolished to allow for the construction of a new modern one. Eastern View, Victoria
Eastern View is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. Eastern View was a remote coastal area prior to the construction of the Great Ocean Road, which was opened to Eastern View, albeit in the form of a narrow gravel track, in March 1922. Only four houses were located in the area in 1924; a fifth was later extended and granted a liquor license as the Eastern View Hotel in 1927. The hotel owners later leased land on the ocean side of the Great Ocean Road and built a tennis court. The Eastern View Hotel was a popular tourist destination for many years, but closed in 1957. The Great Ocean Road Trust developed a nine-hole golf course at Eastern View in 1936. It closed at the beginning of World War II, and did not reopen. Both the former hotel building and the remnants of the golf course were destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. Ceres, Victoria
Ceres is a locality of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. As one of the highest points in Geelong, Ceres has a lookout which overlooks the city. In the 2016 census, Ceres had a population of 254 people. History The Ceres area was first settled by squatters in the late 1830s, and the lots of the Barrabool Parish were advertised in 1839, with the land being sold on 5 February 1840. There was reportedly "plenty of competition" for the Barrabool Hills lands, and the area became part of "Roslin", owned by David Fisher. The government had not provided for a settlement in the Barrabool Parish, and Fisher, after selling much of his estate in 1846, advertised a section of the remainder for sale as the new village of Ceres in March 1850. Buckley, Victoria
Buckley is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. It was formerly known as Laketown. In the 2016 census, Buckley had a population of 211 people. Laketown A hotel called the Lady of the Lake Hotel opened on Barrabool Road at what is now Buckley in 1854, and the area began to be known as Laketown. The hotel reportedly flourished, being located on the road to Colac, and became a social centre for the area. The hotel was a coach stop on the road to Colac, and the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly stopped there in 1870 while his party's horses were being rested. A post office opened at Laketown on 15 March 1872, and a store as added around the same period. A school was opened in 1878 close to the hotel, initially known as Mount Moriac State School (No. 2063), but renamed Laketown in 1883. Barrabool, Victoria
Barrabool is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Barrabool had a population of 235 people. History The area was first settled by squatters in the late 1830s. The lands of the Barrabool Parish were first advertised for sale in 1839, with the parish, consisting of 25 blocks of varying size, sold on 5 February 1840. Wynd writes that there was "plenty of competition for the rich lands of the Barrabool Hills", and that the sale was much more successful than subsequent 1840s attempts at selling the land in the nearby Gnarwarre and Modewarre parishes. The 1850s saw the development of the Berramongo Estate and the Suisse Vineyard at Barrabool, both of which survive today, and the land of the broader Barrabool Hills region was seen as having a "reputation for fertility" as a farming district. Anglesea is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Great Ocean Road in the Surf Coast Shire local government area. In the , Anglesea had a population of 2,545 people. Originally known as Swampy Creek, the area's name was changed to Anglesea River in 1884 when the township was established. A Post Office under that name opened on 16 April 1886. and was renamed Anglesea in 1950. The name derives from Anglesey, an island in North Wales. Alcoa of Australia operated a power station and open-cut coal mine near the town from 1969 until August 2015. The site is now the subject of restorative work. Aireys Inlet is a small coastal inlet and town located on the Great Ocean Road, southwest of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. Aireys Inlet is located between Anglesea, Victoria, Anglesea and Lorne, Victoria, Lorne, and joined with Fairhaven, Victoria, Fairhaven, Moggs Creek, Victoria, Moggs Creek, and Eastern View, Victoria, Eastern View to the west. Surf Coast Shire
The Surf Coast Shire is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 32,251. It includes the towns of Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Lorne, Moriac, Torquay and Winchelsea. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Winchelsea, Shire of Barrabool and part of the former City of South Barwon, which was, at that point, part of the City of Greater Geelong. The Shire is governed and administered by the Surf Coast Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Torquay.
