Shinsuke Suematsu
is a Japanese politician who serves as a member of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. He has represented the Hyogo at-large district as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party since 2004. Before entering politics, Suematsu graduated from the School of Law and Politics, Kwansei Gakuin University in 1979 and worked for All Nippon Airways. Political career Suematsu entered politics in 1983, successfully contesting the Hyogo Prefectural Assembly election as a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate. He served six consecutive terms in the assembly, and was elected deputy speaker of the assembly in 1996. In April 2003 Suematsu was elected to his sixth term, winning the highest number of votes in the three-member Tarumi district with 39.4%. Yoshitada Konoike
was a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party and member of the House of Councillors in the Diet (national legislature), formerly Minister of State for Disaster Mnagement. A native of Amagasaki, Hyōgo and graduate of Waseda University, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 1986 after an unsuccessful run in 1983. After losing his seat in 1993, he was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time in 1995 and is currently serving his fourth 6-year term. 2009 Japanese General Election
General elections were held in Japan on August 30, 2009 to elect the 480 members of the House of Representatives. The opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) defeated the ruling coalition ( Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and New Komeito Party) in a landslide, winning 221 of the 300 constituency seats and receiving 42.4% of the proportional block votes for another 87 seats, a total of 308 seats to only 119 for the LDP (64 constituency seats and 26.7% of the proportional vote). Tarumi District
is one of nine wards of Kobe, Japan. It has an area of 26.89 km², and a population of 219,958 (2008). Tarumi is a suburban area in western Kobe, providing residential towns for commuters to downtown Kobe and even Osaka. The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge starts from this ward toward Awaji Island. The area belonged to the Akashi Domain of Harima Province until the end of the Edo period. In 1899 the village of Tarumi was formed within Akashi District. In 1928 Tarumi village was renamed as a town. In July 1941, Tarumi merged into Kobe and became a part of Suma ward. The modern Tarumi ward was formed from the area of the former Tarumi town in 1946. In 1947 a further seven villages from Akashi District merged into Kobe and became a part of Tarumi until 1982 when they were split off into the separate Nishi ward.
