Shiki-Jitsu
is a 2000 art film written and directed by Hideaki Anno. The film is Anno's second live-action feature. The screenplay is an adaption of Ayako Fujitani's novella ''Tōhimu'', which was inspired by an emotionally difficult time in Los Angeles working on her father Steven Seagal's 1998 film '' The Patriot''. The film tells the story of a director (Shunji Iwai) who meets an odd young woman (Fujitani). Taking place over a period of 33 days, the plot involves these two characters trying to work their way out of a collective emotional funk. Michael Ordona of the ''Los Angeles Times'' reported the film had "dark themes of mental illness and suicidal ideation". Hideaki Anno
is a Japanese animator, filmmaker and actor. He is best known for creating the anime series ''Neon Genesis Evangelion'' (1995)''.'' His style is defined by his postmodernist approach and the extensive portrayal of characters' thoughts and emotions, often through unconventional scenes presenting the mental deconstruction of those characters. Studio Kajino
is a subsidiary of Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli. It was created prior to 2000 by Ghibli animator Yoshiyuki Momose to handle live action films for the studio. Kajino is run by former Ghibli's president Toshio Suzuki, and its first release was '' Shiki-Jitsu'' in 2000. Toshio Suzuki (producer)
is a Japanese film producer of anime and a long-time colleague of Hayao Miyazaki, as well as a co-founder and the former president of Studio Ghibli. Ayako Fujitani
is a Japanese writer and actress. Early life Ayako Fujitani was born in Osaka, Japan. She is the daughter of Steven Seagal by his first wife, aikido master Miyako Fujitani. As a teenager, she also resided in Los Angeles. Shunji Iwai
is a Japanese film director, video artist, writer and documentary maker. Life and career Iwai was born in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. He attended Yokohama National University, graduating in 1987. In 1988 he started out in the Japanese entertainment industry by directing TV dramas and music videos. Then, in 1993, his TV drama, ''Fireworks'', brought him critical praise and the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for his portrayal of a group of children in the town of Iioka.
