Sherborne
Sherborne is a market town and civil parish in north west Dorset, in South West England. It is sited on the River Yeo, on the edge of the Blackmore Vale, east of Yeovil. The parish includes the hamlets of Nether Coombe and Lower Clatcombe. The A30 road, which connects London to Penzance, runs through the town. In the 2011 census the population of Sherborne parish and the two electoral wards was 9,523. 28.7% of the population is aged 65 or older. Sherborne's historic buildings include Sherborne Abbey, its manor house, independent schools, and two castles: the ruins of a 12th-century fortified palace and the 16th-century mansion known as Sherborne Castle built by Sir Walter Raleigh. Much of the old town, including the abbey and many medieval and Georgian buildings, is built from distinctive ochre-coloured ham stone. The town is served by Sherborne railway station. Sherborne is a village and Civil parishes in England, civil parish almost east of Northleach in Gloucestershire. Sherborne is a linear village, extending more than a mile along the valley of Sherborne Brook, a tributary of the River Windrush. The place-name 'Sherborne' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is spelt 'Scireburne', and means 'bright stream'. This is a reference to Sherborne Brook. Sherborne St John is a village and civil parish near Basingstoke in the English county of Hampshire. History The village was named in the Domesday book as ''Sireburne''. It became ''Shireburna'' (12th century), Schyreburne (13th century) and Shirebourne Decani, Shireburn St. John in the 14th century. Sir Bernard Brocas, the 14th century soldier and friend of the Black Prince, held the Beaurepaire estate in Sherborne St John. His son, the rebel, also called Sir Bernard Brocas, made it the family's permanent home. Litton, Somerset
Litton () is a small village and civil parish between Chewton Mendip and West Harptree in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. The parish includes the hamlet of Sherborne. Very close to the village are the Litton Reservoirs. History Litton was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Litune'', meaning 'The small enclosure' from the Old English ''lyt'' and ''tun''. It was the property of Gisa, Bishop of Wells. The shape of some of the existing fields with cross-slope and down-slope field banks and cultivated ridges forming an interleaving irregular mosaic suggest they are of medieval origin. The parish was part of the hundred of Wells Forum. Andrew Sherborne (born 11 March 1961) is an English professional golfer. Sherborne was born in Bristol. He was the leading amateur at The Open Championship in 1984 and turned professional later that year. He played on the European Tour for nearly twenty years, winning the 1991 Madrid Open and the 1992 Peugeot Spanish Open. Towards the end of his tournament career he struggled to hold his place on the main tour, and during this period he picked up his third professional win at the Challenge Tour's 2001 Open Golf Montecchia - PGA Triveneta. His highest placing on the European Tour's Order of Merit was 30th in 1992. Robert Sherborne
Robert Sherborne (born 1453 died 1536) was Bishop of St David's from 1505 to 1508 and Bishop of Chichester from 1508 to 1536. Sherborne was born in Rolleston on Dove, Staffordshire, and educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He was Master of St. Cross Hospital, near Winchester and a Canon of Wells Cathedral until 1493. Sherborne was Archdeacon of Huntingdon (1494–1496), Archdeacon of Buckingham and of Taunton (1496–1505) and Dean of St Paul's (1499–1505). Exceptionally, he held ecclesiastical posts prior to ordination: he was made a deacon in 1499 and ordained a priest on 5 March 1501. From 1505 to 1508 he was bishop of St David's. Baron Sherborne
Lord Sherborne, Baron of Sherborne, in the County of Gloucester, was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1784 for James Dutton, who had earlier represented Gloucestershire in Parliament. He was the son of James Dutton (originally James Naper) by Anne Dutton, daughter of Sir Ralph Dutton, 1st Baronet (see Dutton baronets). His father had assumed the surname of Dutton in lieu of his patronymic on succeeding to the Dutton estates in 1743. The title became extinct upon the death of the eighth Baron in 1985. The Honourable Ralph Dutton, youngest son of the second Baron, was Member of Parliament for Hampshire South and Cirencester. HMS ''Sherborne'' (also HM cutter ''Sherborne'', HMS ''Sherbourne'') was a 10-gun cutter of the Royal Navy. She served in the English Channel for her entire career, operating against smugglers. She was sold in 1784. Design and construction ''Sherborne'' was built at Woolwich Dockyard under the supervision of Master Shipwright Joseph Harris, to a design by Sir Thomas Slade, and was launched on 3 December 1763, having cost £1,581.8.9d to build and fit.
