Sheffield Council Election, 2011
Sheffield City Council elections took place on 5 May 2011. There were 28 seats up for election, one third of the council. The last election left the council with no overall control. Since the previous election, Liberal Democrat councillor Ben Curran, and Lib Dem-turned-independent Frank Taylor had defected to Labour leaving both parties equal at 41 councillors each. This election saw Labour regain control of the council that they lost in 2006, with nine gains from the Lib Dems. Overall turnout was 41.8%. Sheffield City Council elections took place on Thursday 6 May 2010. There were 28 seats up for election in 2010, one of the three councillors from each ward. Since the previous election, Liberal Democrat councillor Frank Taylor had defected to an Independent leaving the Liberal Democrats with 44 councillors. Turnout was up dramatically with it being held alongside the general election, to 62.6%. The higher turnout helped mainly Labour against their electoral rivals, who managed to return the council to no overall control with three gains. This was bolstered by the newly elected Liberal Democrat in Walkley defecting to Labour immediately after being elected. Election result The Labour Party gained two seats from their position following the 2006 election, but also regained a seat lost to the Liberal Democrats through a double vacancy election in Mosborough. 2012 Sheffield City Council Election
Sheffield City Council elections took place on Thursday 3 May 2012 as part of the 2012 United Kingdom local elections. There were 28 seats up for election, one third of the council. The last election in 2011 gave Labour a majority over the Liberal Democrats with 49 councillors. However, one Independent councillor joined Labour after the election, giving the party 50 seats. Four main parties fielded a full slate of 28 candidates. UKIP also put up a full slate, but Steve Moxon was disendorsed as the party's candidate for Dore and Totley. Labour were defending 11 seats, all of which they successfully held in 2011. The Liberal Democrats were defending 16 seats, 10 of which they lost to Labour in 2011. Sheffield City Council
Sheffield City Council is the city council for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It consists of 84 councillors, elected to represent 28 wards, each with three councillors. It is currently under No Overall Control, with Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party each holding chair positions in a proportionate number of committees, with Labour chairing four Committees, the Liberal Democrats chairing three and the Greens chairing two. The Liberal Democrats (commonly referred to as the Lib Dems) are a liberal political party in the United Kingdom. Harry Harpham
Robert Harry Harpham (21 February 1954 – 4 February 2016) was a British Labour Party politician and coal miner. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough from the May 2015 general election until he died nine months later. He was succeeded by his widow, Gill Furniss, as the MP for the seat at the ensuing by-election. Early life and education Harpham was born on 21 February 1954 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Harpham moved to Sheffield in 1985, and studied at Northern College in Barnsley and the University of Sheffield as a mature student. He graduated from Sheffield with a Bachelor's degree in 1991. Career Early career Harpham left school at 16, and became a coal miner at Clipstone Colliery. He took part in the miners' strike of 1984–85 as an NUM member, staying out for the duration. Angela Smith (South Yorkshire Politician)
Angela Christine Smith (born 16 August 1961) is a British former politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Penistone and Stocksbridge from 2010 to 2019 and MP for Sheffield Hillsborough from 2005 to 2010. A member of the Liberal Democrats, she was previously an MP for the Labour Party and Change UK. She was also an Independent politician before joining the Liberal Democrats. Smith was an early critic of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, backing a no-confidence vote in 2016; in part due to this position, she lost a no-confidence motion in her constituency. She resigned from Labour in February 2019 alongside six other MPs in protest at Corbyn's leadership, and they formed the Independent Group, later Change UK. Jonathan William Arnott (born 12 January 1981) is a British politician and former schoolteacher.
