She Went To The Races
''She Went to the Races'' is a 1945 American comedy film directed by Willis Goldbeck and starring James Craig, Frances Gifford and Ava Gardner. The screenplay concerns a team of scientists who discover a seemingly foolproof way of discovering the winner of horse races. Plot Dr. Ann Wotters, working at the Brockhurst Institute of Research in Los Angeles, is devastated when she learns that her uncle, Dr. Homer Pecke, will be let off because the institute can't afford to keep him on staff and his research project running. The institute would need another $20,000 to afford Pecke's services. Ann and her uncle's colleagues Dr. Gurke, Dr. Pembroke and Dr. Collyer, put their sharp heads together to come up with a plan to raise the money needed. They get unexpected help from the institute janitor, who has had recent success at the racetrack. Willis Goldbeck
Willis Goldbeck (October 24, 1898 – September 17, 1979) was an American screenwriter, film director and producer. He wrote for 40 films between 1923 and 1962. He also directed ten films between 1942 and 1951. Willis graduated from Worcester Academy. Biography Willis Goldbeck was born in New York City. A former journalist, Goldbeck entered films as a screenwriter in the early 1920s. He wrote most of the "Dr. Kildare" series for MGM, starting with the first one, ''Young Dr. Kildare'' (1938), and directed several of them. Although he directed several more films after that—including one of Burt Lancaster's early swashbucklers, ''Ten Tall Men'' (1951)—he mainly concentrated on screenwriting, and in the mid-1950s turned to producing. He retired from films in 1962. He died September 17, 1979 in Sag Harbor, New York, a month before his 81st birthday. Chester Clute
Chester Lamont Clute (February 18, 1891 – April 2, 1956) was an American actor familiar in scores of Hollywood films from his debut in 1930. Diminutive, bald-pated with a bristling moustache, he appeared in mostly unbilled roles, consisting usually of one or two lines, in nearly 250 films. Biography Born Chester Lamont Clute in Orange, New Jersey, Clute died of a heart attack in Woodland Hills, California, aged 65. He is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery. The genre is one of the oldest in American cinema; some of the first silent movies were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. John Dehner
John Dehner (DAY-ner) (born John Dehner Forkum, also credited Dehner Forkum; November 23, 1915February 4, 1992) was an American stage, radio, film, and television actor. From the late 1930s to the late 1980s, he amassed a long list of performance credits, often in roles as sophisticated con men, shady authority figures, and other smooth-talking villains. His credits just in feature films, televised series, and in made-for-TV movies number almost 300 productions. Dehner worked extensively as an actor radio during the latter half of that medium's "golden age", accumulating hundreds of additional credits on nationally broadcast series. His most notable starring role was as Paladin on the radio version of the television Western ''Have Gun – Will Travel'', which aired for 106 episodes on CBS from 1958 to 1960.
