Shawn Raboutou
Shawn Raboutou (born April 19, 1998) is an American rock climber. In 2022, he became the first person to climb the bouldering grade of on more than one occasion. Early life Shawn Raboutou was born in Boulder, Colorado on April 19, 1998. He is the son of former professional climbers and Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou; his younger sister is Brooke Raboutou, a competition climber. In 2011, when Raboutou was 13 years old, he climbed ''Welcome to Tijuana,'' a graded sport climbing route in Spain. Climbing career Bouldering On April 6, 2022, Raboutou made the first ascent of '' Alphane'', a boulder problem in Chironico, Switzerland, although he didn’t announce his ascent until August 2022. Later on in 2022, Raboutou announced his first ascent of ''Megatron'', another boulder in Colorado, making him the first climber in history to climb two different V17-grade boulder problems. Competition Climbing
A climbing competition (or comp) is usually held indoors on purpose built climbing walls. There are three main types of climbing competition: lead, speed, and bouldering. In lead climbing, the competitors start at the bottom of a route and must climb it within a certain time frame in a single attempt, making sure to clip the rope into pre-placed quickdraws along the route. Bouldering competitions consist of climbing short problems without rope, with the emphasis on number of problems completed and the attempts necessary to do so. Speed climbing can either be an individual or team event, with the person or team that can climb a standardized route the fastest winning. The IFSC Climbing World Cup is a series of climbing competitions held annually and organized by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). The athletes compete in three disciplines: lead, bouldering and speed. The number of competitions and venues vary from year to year. The first World Cup was held in 1989, and included only lead climbing events. Speed climbing was introduced in 1998 and bouldering in 1999. Bouldering
Bouldering is a form of free climbing that is performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. While bouldering can be done without any equipment, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry and to provide a firmer grip, and bouldering mats to prevent injuries from falls.
