''Shattered'' (german: Scherben) is a 1921 German silent Kammerspielfilm directed by Lupu Pick, written by Carl Mayer, and is considered to be the earliest example of the kammerspielfilm. Plot Set during the winter, the story tells the tale of a track checker and his family who live a monotonous and poverty-stricken life next to a railway line. Lupu Pick
Lupu Pick (2 January 1886 – 7 March 1931) was a German actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter of the silent era. He appeared in 50 films between 1910 and 1928. Born in Romania, Pick's father was a Jewish Austrian,Hans Morgenstern "Jüdisches biographisches Lexikon. Eine Sammlung von bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten jüdischer Herkunft ab 1800", LIT Verlag, Vienna; p.637 his mother, of Romanian origin. He began as a stage actor in Hamburg, Flensburg and Berlin before 1910. In 1917 he founded the film company Rex-Film AG. He served on the board of the Film Association of Industrialists (''Vorstand des Verbandes der Filmindustriellen''), SPIO and the Film Directors Association of Germany (''Verbandes der Filmregisseure Deutschlands'') and worked intensively to establish the union-based umbrella organization of Filmmakers in Germany (''Filmschaffenden Deutschlands'') (Dacho). A track checker is a small railway carriage used in the United States and Ireland to audit the gauge and integrity of railway tracks. Paul Otto
Paul Otto Schlesinger (8 February 1878 – 25 or 30 November 1943) was a German film actor and director. Born in Berlin, he began a qualification as a retail merchant and made his actor's debut at the age of 17. Otto worked at Theaters in Halle, Wiesbaden and Hanover before he returned to Berlin about 1906. He first appeared in the silent film ''Ringkampf Konkurrenz'' in 1910 and in ''Arsène Lupin contra Sherlock Holmes'' (1910-11, five episode film serial) next to Viggo Larsen. In 1912 Otto directed his first own film ''Selbstgerichtet''. In the beginning of the 1930s he also appeared in successful Sound movies like '' Der Hauptmann von Köpenick''. After 1933, Otto returned to theaterstages and worked at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the ''Kammerspiele'' Berlin.
