Sharon Straus
Sharon Elizabeth Straus is a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Toronto, and geriatrician and Squires-Chalmers Chair and physician-in-chief at Unity Health Toronto. Straus was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2021. Early life and education Straus completed her medical degree and Master of Science degree from the University of Toronto (U of T) and a research fellowship at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford. Career In 2005, Straus was the recipient of a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Knowledge Translation. While serving in this role, she also served as the director of the knowledge translation program at St. Michael's Hospital's Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. In 2013, Straus was appointed a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Geriatrics
Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a medical specialty focused on providing care for the unique health needs of older adults. The term ''geriatrics'' originates from the Greek language, Greek γέρων ''geron'' meaning "old man", and ιατρός ''iatros'' meaning "healer". It aims to promote health by prevention (medical), preventing, diagnosing and treating disease in older adults. There is no defined age at which patients may be under the care of a geriatrician, or geriatric physician, a physician who specializes in the care of elderly people.
