Domestic Shared cost numbers normally enable non-geographical or long-distance calls that are priced to the caller as if they were local. The difference is paid by the called party. Area code 808 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the Hawaiian Islands, comprising the windward and the leeward islands. The code was assigned to Hawaii on August 8, 1957, about two years before statehood on August 21, 1959. Slightly over 1.4 million people live in Hawaii.
