Shamsuzzaman Bir Uttam
Shahid Shamsuzzaman ( bn, শামসুজ্জামান; died 1971) was a freedom fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was posthumously awarded with a Bir Uttam by the Government of Bangladesh. Early life and family Shamsuzzaman was born into a Sunni Bengali family in the village of Shonar Char in Meghna, Tipperah district, East Bengal, which was then a part of Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He was among the two sons and three daughters of Muhammad Dawlat Husayn and Begum Ayetunnesa. Out of his siblings, only his sister Begum Momtaz is still alive. Liberation War and death Shamsuzzaman enrolled at the University of Dacca to study soil science. Bangladesh Liberation War began whilst he was in his third year of studies, and so he left to join the Mukti Bahini. He completed his training within 28 days and was then employed to the Eighth East Bengal Regiment supervised by the Z-Force. ''Shaheed'' ( , , ; pa, ਸ਼ਹੀਦ) denotes a martyr in Islam. The word is used frequently in the Quran in the generic sense of "witness" but only once in the sense of "martyr" (i.e. one who dies for his faith); the latter sense acquires wider usage in the ''hadith''. The term is commonly used as a posthumous title for those who are considered to have accepted or even consciously sought out their own death in order to bear witness to their beliefs. Like the English-language word ''martyr'', in the 20th century, the word ''shahid'' came to have both religious and non-religious connotations, and has often been used to describe those who died for non-religious ideological causes. This suggests that there is no single fixed and immutable concept of martyrdom among Muslims and Sikhs. It is also used in Sikhism. Etymology In Arabic, the word ''shahid'' means "witness".
