Shackleford
Shackleford is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Guildford, Surrey, England centred to the west of the A3 between Guildford and Petersfield southwest of London and southwest of Guildford. Shackleford includes the localities of Eashing, Hurtmore, Norney and Gatwick. History The village does not appear in the Domesday Book of 1086; however, Hurtmore manor in the east of the parish and Rodsall manor, just to the west of the parish, a far-south part of Puttenham, do appear. The name first appears in 1220, as ''Sakelesford'', and appears in a variety of mostly quite minor variants thereafter. The second element, ''-ford'', is self-explanatory, but the etymology of the "Shackle-" element is uncertain. One possibility is that it is from Old English ''sceacol'' 'a shackle', perhaps with reference to a chain used to aid in crossing the river. Shackleford (horse)
Shackleford (foaled February 25, 2008) is a chestnut Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2011 Preakness Stakes. He also finished second in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and won the Metropolitan Handicap and Clark Handicap in 2012. Shackleford was trained by Dale Romans, who raced the colt twice as a 2-year-old with one win. As a 3-year-old, he prepared for the Kentucky Derby with a second place finish in the Florida Derby. He came fourth in the 2011 Kentucky Derby and then won the Preakness Stakes with odds of 13-1. In doing so, Shackleford became the beneficiary of the largest payoff purse in Preakness history, winning not only the $600,000 winner's purse, but also $550,000 as the XpressBet Bonus winner. Late in the year, he finished second in the Haskell Invitational and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Charles Edward Shackleford (April 22, 1966 – January 27, 2017) was an American professional basketball player. He played center and power forward, he was renowned for his rebounding – regularly leading leagues in Europe. He played 6 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), mostly as a bench player, intersected by seasons in Europe where he had more success. Off the court he was involved in a number of controversies and legal issues. Lynn Shackelford (born August 27, 1947) is an American former professional basketball player. A graduate of John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California, Shackelford earned 7 varsity letters in 3 years in basketball, baseball and golf. He was the CIF Player of the Year in basketball in 1965 for the Southern California Section. A 6'5" forward, Shackelford played college basketball at UCLA under legendary coach John Wooden. He was one of only 4 players to have started on 3 NCAA championship teams ( 67, 68, 69). The others are Lew Alcindor, Curtis Rowe and Henry Bibby. He complemented his teammates as a dead eye pure shooter; most of his shots would be 3 pointers today. He is best known for his professional analysis of the mathematics of the casino games. He is also an adjunct professor of actuarial science and mathematics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Federal Aid Road Act of 1916 (also known as the Bankhead–Shackleford Act and Good Roads Act), , , was enacted on July 11, 1916, and was the first federal highway funding legislation in the United States. The rise of the automobile at the start of the 20th century, especially after the low-price Ford Model T in 1908, created a demand for better roads on a national level.
