St. Mary's Seminary/Senior High School (SMASCO), formerly St. Mary's Seminary Secondary School, is a boys-only Education in Ghana#Secondary cycle, second cycle institution in Lolobi, in the Oti Region of Ghana. The Oti Region was carved out of the northern part of the existing Volta Region. History SMASCO was founded as a minor seminary at Lolobi on 29 September 1961 by the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of Reverend Anthony Konings, a Dutch missionary who was the bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Keta–Akatsi, Keta-Akatsi Diocese. The institution was intended to serve both as the minor seminary for the entire Keta Diocese and as a secondary school for the area. From its founding date, SMASCO opened admission to non-seminarians and students of all denominations. The first headmaster of the institution was Fr. William Van Frankenhuijesen, SMA. Bishop Herman College, sometimes abbreviated to BIHECO, is a boys-only second-cycle institution located at Kpando in the Volta Region of Ghana. History Bishop Herman College was the first Catholic boys secondary school established by the Roman Catholic Church in the Volta Region of Ghana. The college was founded by Dutch missionaries and it is one of the best performing senior high schools in Ghana. It is named after French missionary, Bishop Augustine Herman, who served in the Keta Diocese from 1923 to 1945. Education In Ghana
Before the arrival of European settlers, who introduced a formal education system addressed to the elites, education in Ghana was mainly informal and based on apprenticeship. Economic activities in pre-colonial Ghana were based on farm produce shared within households and members of each household specialized in providing necessities such as cooking utilities, shelter, clothing, and furniture, and trade with other households was therefore practiced on a very small scale. As such there was no need for employment outside the household that would have otherwise called for disciplines, values, and skills through a formal education system. Francis Anani Kofi Lodonu (born 19 November 1937) is a Ghanaian Roman Catholic Bishop. He was the bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Ho until his retirement in 2015. Early life Lodonu grew up at Gbi Atabu, three kilometers from Hohoe. He attended elementary school at Gbi-Atabu Roman Catholic School from 1944 to 1947.
