Montfort Stokes (March 12, 1762November 4, 1842) was an American United States Democratic Party, Democratic (originally United States Democratic-Republican Party, Democratic-Republican) politician who served as United States Senate, U.S. Senator from 1816 to 1823, and the List of Governors of North Carolina, 25th Governor of North Carolina from 1830 to 1832. Biography Born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, Lunenburg County in the Colony of Virginia, Stokes was the youngest of the eleven children of David Stokes, a military officer and judge. At the age of 13, he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. During the American Revolutionary War, Stokes was captured by the British and confined for seven months on the British prison ship ''Jersey'' in New York Harbor. He later held the rank of major general in the state militia from 1804 to 1816. Connie Stokes (born September 3, 1953) is an American politician from the state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, she is a former DeKalb County, Georgia, DeKalb County County commission, Commissioner, and formerly served in the Georgia State Senate. Stokes ran for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, lieutenant governor in 2014. Early life and career Stokes was born into poverty and abandoned by her mother, who was an alcoholic. John Stokes (March 20, 1756 – October 12, 1790) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of North Carolina. Education and career Born on March 20, 1756, in the Colony of Virginia, British America, Stokes served as a captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, from 1778 to 1783. He was a state's attorney for Rowan County, North Carolina in 1784. He was a teacher of law in Rowan County from 1784 to 1785. He was a member of the North Carolina Senate from Montgomery County from 1786 to 1787. He was in private practice in Rowan County starting in 1787. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons (now the North Carolina House of Representatives) in 1789. William Brickly Stokes (September 9, 1814 – March 14, 1897) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives from Tennessee. He also served as colonel of the 5th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry during the American Civil War. Biography He was born on September 9, 1814 in Chatham County, North Carolina. He attended the common schools, moved with his family to Temperance Hall, Tennessee, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1849 to 1852. He served in the Tennessee Senate in 1855 and 1856. Stokes owned between seven and ten enslaved people in Tennessee. Stokes was elected as a member of the Opposition Party to the Thirty-sixth Congress by Tennessee's 4th congressional district, serving from March 4, 1859 to March 4, 1861.
