Semilla (political Party)
Movimiento Semilla (lit. ''Seed Movement'') is a centre-left political party in Guatemala. History The Semilla Movement was registered before the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on July 14, 2017, its general secretary is César Bernardo Arévalo de León. The party began after the demonstrations that led to the resignation of President Otto Pérez Molina. The party defines itself as a political, democratic and plural movement. It has more than 22,000 members. The Semilla Movement party had rapprochement with former Attorney General Thelma Aldana to explore a possible presidential candidacy and a coalition with Encuentro por Guatemala and Libre. Bernardo Arévalo
César Bernardo Arévalo de León (; born 7 October 1958 in Montevideo) is a Guatemalan diplomat, sociologist, writer, and politician who is the president-elect of Guatemala. He defeated former First Lady Sandra Torres in the second round of the 2023 presidential election on 20 August 2023 and will be inaugurated as the 52nd president on 14 January 2024. Arévalo is the son of former Guatemalan president Juan José Arévalo. A member and co-founder of the political party Semilla, he has served as a deputy in the Congress of Guatemala since January 2020. He previously served as Ambassador to Spain from 1995 to 1996 and as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1995. Thelma Aldana
Thelma Esperanza Aldana Hernández (; born 27 September 1955) is a Guatemalan jurist and politician, former President of the Supreme Court and former Attorney General. Life Aldana was born in Gualán, eastern Guatemala, in 1955. She graduated from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. She has a Master's degree in Civil and Procedural Law. She started her career in 1984 as a janitor in a Family Court in Quetzaltenango. In 2009 she became a judge in the Supreme Court. She served as the president of the Supreme Court from 2011-2012. In 2014 she replaced Claudia Paz y Paz as Guatemala’s attorney general. She is married. Karin Herrera
Karin Larissa Herrera Aguilar (born 25 July 1968) is a Guatemalan biologist, professor, sociologist, and politician who is the vice president-elect of Guatemala. A member of the political party Semilla, she will become vice president on 14 January 2024, alongside President-elect Bernardo Arévalo, having won the second round of the 2023 presidential election. Early life and career Herrera was born on 25 July 1968 in Guatemala City into a conservative middle-class family. She is the only daughter of Adalberto Herrera and Gladis Aguilar. 2023 Guatemalan General Election
General elections were held in Guatemala on 25 June 2023 to elect the president and vice president, all 160 seats of the Congress, all 20 members of the Central American Parliament, and mayors and councils for all 340 municipalities in the country. Incumbent president Alejandro Giammattei was constitutionally prohibited from running for a second four-year term. As no presidential candidate obtained over 50% of the vote, a second round was scheduled between the top two finishers on 20 August. The official count of the general election by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal indicated that Sandra Torres from National Unity of Hope and Bernardo Arévalo from Semilla would contest the second round. He has been president of the Central American Institute of Fiscal Studies (ICEFI) since September 2012. Nineth Montenegro
Nineth Varenca Montenegro Cottom (born 1958 in San Marcos, Guatemala) is a Guatemalan human rights activist and a victim of state terrorism. She was the first person to face civil resistance on a national level as a result of protesting in the streets about the whereabouts of her husband, Edgar Fernando García, who had been captured illegally by the government and has been a missing person since February 18, 1984. María Consuelo Porras Argueta (born August 23, 1953) is a Guatemalan lawyer. She served as Deputy Magistrate of the Constitutional Court since April 2016. Encuentro por Guatemala ("EG")– a Spanish name variously translated as "Encounter for Guatemala" (for example, by the BBC and CNN), or as "Together for Guatemala" (Reuters) – was a Guatemalan political party; ''encuentro'' may also translate as "gathering", "meeting", or "union". 2019 Guatemalan General Election
General elections were held in Guatemala on 16 June 2019, to elect the President, Congress and local councils. A second round of the presidential elections was held on 11 August 2019, since no candidate won a majority in the first round. Alejandro Giammattei won the election in the second round of voting.
