Selfoss (town)
Selfoss () is a town in southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. It is the seat of the municipality of Árborg. The Icelandic Route 1 (Iceland), Route 1 runs through the town on its way between Hveragerði and Hella, Iceland, Hella. The town is a centre of commerce and small industries with a population of 9000 (2021), making it the largest residential area in South Iceland. Geography Selfoss is located about 11 km inland from the southwestern coast of Iceland, and 50 km from Reykjavík. It is the major town and the administrative seat of the Southern Region (Iceland), Southern Region. The closest other towns are Eyrarbakki, Stokkseyri and Hveragerði. Ungmennafélag Selfoss, commonly known as Selfoss or UMF Selfoss, is an Icelandic multisport club, located in the town of Selfoss in the Southern Region. In May 2019, the Selfoss men's handball team won the national handball championship for the first time. In August 2019, the women's football team added the club's second major title in one year when it won the Icelandic Football Cup. History Ungmennafélag Selfoss (English: Selfoss' Youth Club) was established on 1 June 1936, as a general sports club for young men and women under the name Ungmennafélagið Tíbrá. On 26 January 1937 its name was changed to Ungmennafélag Selfoss. The Selfoss men's football team, commonly known as Selfoss or UMF Selfoss, is the men's football department of the Ungmennafélag Selfoss multi-sport club. It is based in Selfoss, Iceland. The team plays at JÁVERK-völlurinn and traditionally play in a maroon strip. History The football department of Ungmennafélag Selfoss was established in 1955 but the team's debut season was not until 1966. From 1966 to 1993 the team played in 1. deild karla (2nd level in pyramid), 2. deild karla (3rd level in pyramid) and 3. deild karla (4th level in pyramid). From 1993 to 2007 the team played in 2. deild, but were always close to being promoted. In the summer of 2007 the team were finally promoted to 1. deild. It is based in Selfoss, Iceland, and currently plays in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top-tier women's football league in Iceland. The team plays it home games at the JÁVERK-völlur. Selfoss (waterfall)
Selfoss () is a waterfall on the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the north of Iceland. The river drops over a number of waterfalls over about 30 km before flowing into Öxarfjörður, a bay of the Arctic Sea. The river originates as melt water from the glacier Vatnajökull and therefore the water flow varies depending on the season, the weather and volcanic activity. A few hundred meters downstream of the -high waterfall is Dettifoss, the second-most powerful waterfall in Europe. Below the falls, the river passes through a gorge which is part of the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park.
